I am home from all the Xmas hullabaloo. It went very well this year, though the best part of it was clearly visiting with the nephews.
My oldest nephew, T, at 2 and a half, is becoming quite the little person. He speaks in full sentences now and is a very talkative guy. He is very funny to talk to. When I gave him his present he said, "Merry Christmas everybody Uncle Dan!" He still doesn't get a lot of the finer points.
T is a curiosity because he is very... good. Really and truly. He doesn't push boundaries (much), NEVER tantrumed in two days, and doesn't protest when he's told not to touch things, or that he can't have this or that. He is generally quite gentle around his little brother, K, and requires only light supervision around him for understandable lapses in understanding his strength. For a kid his age he is really and truly an angel.
I was clowning with him when he bonked me on the head with a magazine and said, "No, T, you have to be gentle," in a baby-ish voice, and made him pet my head like I was a puppy. He thought this was very funny, and throughout the visit he would come up to me and pet my head and say, "I'm being gentle with Uncle Dan."
"That's right, I said," because I'm a flower.
"I'm a flower too," he replied. He doesn't see that as absurd just yet. Still too little.
Too cute!
And K is turning into a much older baby. He's about 11 months old. He can stand himself up and can walk across couches and tables as long as he hangs on. My brother says he's seen him take a few steps on his own but he's not quite there yet. He is also very talkative in his way. On one of the many car rides he took he seemed to be singing. Apparently he does that all the time. The kid genuinely likes the sound of his voice and making raspberries. He has gigantic blue eyes and seems to have blond hair, though that could change. He's a happy baby like his brother was, though he's way more of a momma's boy and doesn't like to be put down unless he's got things to tinker with.
He smells like a baby. How do they do that?
At one point we were trying to quiet everyone down and put on Wall-E. K started screaming when I set him down, but after picking him up and bouncing him around a bit he totally conked out on my shoulder. We watched the whole movie with a sleeping baby on me, nuzzled in my neck, and T was laying down with his head against my other side. I have to say, it was great. I really love those kids.
Kids are so good for me! I only hope I can be good for them too. I miss them already.
