two days after the wedding we packed up and left the amalfi coast. with four of us (and everyone's suitcases) in the car and another three friends busing it, we arrived in pompeii that afternoon.

i've been to pompeii several times as a kid, but it's been well over 10 years since the last time i was there. i was disappointed again that some of the places where you used to be able to just walk right up to the wall and touch the frescos are now roped off or behind glass. but unlike paestum, you can still go inside and walk around some of the former buildings. what amazes me is that even decades after opening, there are still entire areas being excavated and discovered today. and way too many stray dogs, but that is another subject.

mt. vesuvius destroyed and simultaneously preserved the city because of the way it erupted in 79 AD, covering the city in an explosive burst of ash - and even though it hasn't erupted since 1944, it is still very much considered an active volcano. this minor detail doesn't seem to bother the millions of people who live in the surrounding cities however.

i don't know what this little dude is supposed to be, although i think i may have overhead a tour guide saying he was there to ward off the evil eye:
