One news site bubbles an article from 2002 up to a list of popular articles based on automated site behavior sparked by user actions.

Another site takes action based on the appearance of an article that wasn't previously there, and burbles the news around a bit more.

It picks up steam.

Automated stock trading software takes action based on this "new" hot news item.
