And here we have a beautiful young woman, almost nineteen, practically bouncing in. She has eyes so blue they just about jump out at you, and long, long hair, inherited from her mother, originally the blackest black imaginable, but now dyed multiple colors you don't actually find in nature ( Read more... )

"Are you from a huge family too?" Demosthenes asks curiously, giving her a casually charming grin. "I said that when I arrived here, but Christ, I wouldn't be surprised if more showed up."

She looks him over, smiling. "Large by some standards, tiny by others. There are five of us, and I'm the youngest. What about you?"

He laughs a little. "It's really fucking complicated. I have a twin sister, three brothers, a little sister, and two half-siblings -- not to mention the cousins I grew up with. We're not a large family, but damn do we have our issues."

"So we're about even, then." She grins. "I have two cousins, but they live in another world entirely. I see them maybe once every few years. But then there are my parents' friends' kids, who all might as well be cousins. Or even siblings. Most of them are here already."

"Do you get along with your family? Mine's pretty fucking awesome, but--" After a slight pause, he shakes his head a little. "I can honestly say I love my family, but I'd be shitting you if I said that I felt like I belonged. But that's another story, preferably one told after a few drinks. -- My name's Demosthenes, by the way. Demosthenes Pendergast, but you can call me Dean if you like."

"Actually I do, surprisingly. My mom and dad can drive me insane sometimes, and my older brother and sisters do all the time, but I can't imagine life without them. You know? We're like this tight little... unit, thing. I dunno. I know that if anything ever happened to me, my whole family would be there in a second to help. And that's always nice to know." She grins a little sheepishly. "Sorry, I'm babbling. I think I'll go with Dean, since I doubt I could pronounce your full name. I'm Elena Thropp-Cohen... but everyone calls me Lena."

"Don't get me started on my parents. Mum's all right, but Dad-- he used to be a top-notch FBI agent, and he's still as intelligent and still as much of a perfectionist, and jesus fucking christ, does he expect a lot from us kids. At least it's good to hear that your family sounds nice and well-adjusted." And here's his casually charming grin again, with a touch of a bow (there are certain things you pick up from the Pendergast family). "It's nice to meet you , Lena."

"And FBI agent? Wow. That really does have to be crap for you guys. My dad's a film genius or something, but he doesn't expect all of us to be. And my mom is..." She trails off, then shrugs, with a smile. "She's my mom. And we're all crazy. But adjusted to our craziness." She's impressed by the bow, and might even let a giggle escape. "It's very nice to meet you."

"Nah, it wasn't too bad for the rest of them, but I was--" and here he leans closer in a conspiratory whisper, though it's clear he isn't shy about revealing this to people who aren't family "--a high school drop-out. That's pretty fucking bad in our family, but I've managed to adjust. And you? What're your siblings like?"

She gasps dramatically. "Say it isn't so!" She giggles, but not at him. "I couldn't believe it when I actually made it into Shiz. I'm one of those 'smart, but doesn't apply herself' students, you know? -- Let's see... my oldest sister is married to the guy she's been in love with practically since they were still in the womb, and they have two little brats." But the way her eyes light up show how much she adores those kids. "Then there's Bit. She's in a band, and she's a dancer," the wiggle of her eyebrows suggests exactly what kind of dancer she is, "and married to her best friend. Toph's almost done getting his psych degree at NYU in The Other World," and there's no doubt that Topher is her favorite sibling, "and Sawyer's studying bugs at some school in The Other World. Georgia. And she's engaged." She grins. "Thorough enough? Or have I officially talked your ear off?"

"You sure you still want to be hanging around a shit-for-brains high school dropout like me?" He grins at her, obviously joking, then listens to her talk about her siblings. "I don't think any amount of talking could phase me. I mean, fuck, I grew up with Tristan of all people. Your siblings sound just as varied as mine."

"Of course!" She returns the grin. "Besides, you seem really nice. I like you so far." Her grin turns to a smile, a tender one, for lack of a better word. "They're all insane. -- Oh! I met Tristan. He's nice too. He made me laugh."
