And here we have a beautiful young woman, almost nineteen, practically bouncing in. She has eyes so blue they just about jump out at you, and long, long hair, inherited from her mother, originally the blackest black imaginable, but now dyed multiple colors you don't actually find in nature ( Read more... )

And from Tristan, as per usual for him, she gets a bright and friendly grin.

"Hi! The last one of what? Wait, let me guess. The last -- girl with bright blue eyes and really pretty hair? Though that probably wouldn't be true, because knowing this place, there could be many more girls like that arriving sooner or later -- not that your hair isn't awesome, because it is. Anyway, um, I'm Tristan I-should-tattoo-my-middle-names-on-the-back-of-my-hand Pendergast, and it's nice to meet you."

She blinks, not quite sure how to respond to that, then laughs. "It's very nice to meet you. I'm Lena Thropp-Cohen. And I meant the last of my family, but you can take it how you wish. I've never seen anyone with hair quite like mine. Let me know if you find someone. And your parents have really weird taste in middle names."

That's the usual reaction to Tristan, definitely, but he'll continue brightly and unperturbed. "I meant girls with blue eyes and pretty hair in general, actually, because while there are a lot of those and probably more to come, your hair is definitely one-of-a-kind, and how did you get it like that anyway? And -- that wasn't actually my middle name, if it wasn't obvious." He looks slightly sheepish. "I actually have two middle names, but I keep forgetting both of them, so I say something random instead."

That's good, because she definitely didn't mean anything bad by laughing. "Oh, there are plenty of us, I'm sure. Which might be part of why I dyed it like I did. I did it slowly... streak by streak. It started out with just a few green ones, mostly to annoy my mother." She looks at him curiously. "How can you forget your own middle name?"

"That's really awesome, and I can definitely associate with the feeling of wanting to stand out more, except I don't usually have to try to be different from other people, especially after I've had coffee or any other sort of caffeine. I once juggled chairs in a restaurant to impress someone, actually-- My middle names are impossible to remember," he shrugs a little, as if this isn't a big deal. "I can remember a billion other things I don't really need to remember, but not that."

She laughs again. "Oh, I don't need the hair to stand out... I do that enough on my own. Especially since I practically live off caffeine." She tilts her head in interest. "Juggled chairs? How did you do that? And... are they nice middle names? Maybe you should look them up and write them down!"

"Do you really? We must be long-lost twins, or something, except not really, because I think the Pendergast family has enough twins, and the thought of me having a twin is kind of scary--" He beams a little, because this was on a date, and the thought of that date clearly makes him happy. "Well, it took a little practice, but I managed to progress from juggling small things like apples to juggling huge things like chairs. -- And I'm sure they are! My parents tend to give us really impossible to remember historical or classical middle names, though, even though they're probably nice and would make me look intelligent if I remembered them."

She giggles. "No, I think my mom would have told me if I had a twin. It's a nice thought, though." She's genuinely curious. "Why did you start juggling? Just because you were bored" She grins. "I don't think I have the coordination for that. Especially not to juggle chairs! I saw this guy at the circus outside the Emerald City juggle flaming knives. Have you ever done that?" Another giggle. "Well, if you ever remember it, let me know! I'd love to hear it."

"I can't exactly remember why, because I've always been doing things that could challenge my coordination, like juggling and riding unicycles and everything, mostly just because it's fun and I really didn't have anything better to do--" he breaks off, easily distracted, and latches onto a new topic, "--but juggling flaming knives I've never done, though I've juggled the non-flaming kind. I should probably try that one of these days!"
