Disguising themselves among the spaceship debris, they crashland in Mars' ocean and have to hide there as more god chariots search overhead. Mahnmut installs a radio transmitter in Orphu's carapace so they can at least talk over tightbeam, but Orphu's only understanding of what goes on is through Mahnmut's relayed observations. Although they have only the vaguest knowledge of the rest of the mission (travel to Olympus Mons and activate a Device which may or may not be a bomb), they decide to do the best they can to complete it. The damaged submersible gets them to land, where Mahnmut enlists the aid of a race of photosynthetic Little Green Men. The LGM procure transportation for them in the form of a small sailing vessel, and help Mahnmut get Orphu on board.

They can only get so close by water, and after weeks on the ship, they take off in a hot air balloon, but are subsequently spotted and captured by one of the Greek gods. The god takes them to a great hall on Olympus Mons, where there is a brief discussion over what to do with them. Zeus ultimately decides the moravecs are to be destroyed, confiscates their Device, and confines them to a secluded room to await death. Hera is just about to vaporize them when she's abruptly tasered into unconsciousness from behind. Their unlikely savior is one Doctor Thomas Hockenberry, classics scholar, equipped with an invisibility cowl and stun gun. Hockenberry explains he can help them escape by quantum teleporting them one at a time. Orphu is fitted with a levitation harness to make him more mobile, but Mahnmut opts to borrow Hockenberry's invisibility cowl and stay behind to retrieve the Device.

Hockenberry takes Orphu with him, but since Orphu can only communicate via radio, he's left in the dark for a while. At last Mahnmut returns with the news that he set the Device to go off in 60 minutes, and explains that they are in the middle of the Iliad gone wrong. Orphu has spent the past hours on the beach where the Greeks have brought up their black ships to lay siege to the city of Troy/Ilium. It's the last year of the war, but things have suddenly gone widely off course, with the Trojans and the Greeks joining forces to declare war on the gods. Not long after Mahnmut's return, Zeus comes down from Olympos to drop an atomic bomb on the city of Troy, destroying King Priam's palace and sending all into chaos.

The timer on the Device reaches zero before the Greeks and Trojans can coordinate, and suddenly the sky and ground are filled with portals connecting the ancient Earth of Ilium to the modern-day Mars of Olympos. Through the holes come military spaceships, one of which lands not far from Orphu and Mahnmut. Military "rockvecs" approach them, looking for Koros III and Ri Po, but Orphu explains they died on arrival and assumes command, demanding an explanation and ordering the rockvecs to put a forcefield over the city of Troy to protect their human allies. The Device, it's revealed, was a way to stabilize the quantum tunnels--membrane or "Brane" holes--already in use by the Olympian gods, and exploit them to get the rockvecs to Mars.
