Back on the road in the land of the Rising Sun

Well, after a month at home, it was back on a plane back to Asia. First stop Tokyo, Japan. I arrived in town late afternoon on Saturday and after getting my rail pass, renting a phone (Japan has their own technology so this is on of only 2 or 3 places in the world where my phone won't work) it was off to Tokyo from the airport. Yup, when I was in Tokyo, navigating was one of the most challenging elements. Fortunately the subway system is excellent, and there are station name signs in English, so we managed to travel around without much trouble.

Finding a specific building is difficult, since street addresses are based on when the building was built, not the physical location! We took a few unexpected detours because of this. So, get a good guidebook, and enjoy the food!

Yes,I have found the subway/train system to be quite easy to navigate. And I am figuring out some things to help find places a little bit, but it is still real hard. One thing that helps is having a map that includes "chome" lines. Since all the places are divided into these several square block areas if you know the chome (usually included in addresses) you know how to get to the right area which is at least a good start. Of course not all maps have these marked on them.
