Hard Working Weekend

Sep 29, 2013 18:49

After nearly two years here, we finally got our act together: materials, equipment, time and weather all combined and we did some significant yard work this weekend. We dug out two large shrubs we didn't want; we pruned and weeded and pulled up grapevine and vinca (periwinkle) like crazy. We then rented a (mid-tine) tiller from the Depot and we tilled the *entire* backyard, three passes. (Limed the soil while we were at it, since I had free lime left over from my brother's backyard.) We moved a ton of soil, digging up the high spots in the yard to fill in the cavity left from the concrete we jackhammered and hauled away back in the spring (and other low spots). We leveled the yard to the best of our ability. (With lots of turned-under chunks of sod, things may settle unevenly - we can fill in any bad low spots in the spring.) It remains now to reseed the lawn and see what comes up!

The yard already looks a ton different, with shrubs removed and with the ground actually much closer to level. I'm going to divide off a portion on one side for some perennials, and this is the year that I am actually going to set up some raised beds for vegetables!

But CJ and I both worked our butts off manhandling the tiller and moving soil all weekend. We're gonna be a pair of tired, sore kittens come tomorrow morning! Hurrah for accomplishment, huh? ^_^
