Yesterday I watched the opposition leader give his address and answer questions to the press club, 4 days before the election. It was highlighted by the host's parting remark, handing Rudd a clock saying, "I really want to give you a ticking box, but i've only got a clock".
He just about swayed me. I mean if he were to be totally human he'd never win the election. But on questions of his wife I saw a glimpse of humanity, I think. I should put feelings aside and vote on what he says he'll do. I agree with almost everything he says. Public servants should be independent, workers should be protected, etc etc but ... the base unit of society is not a family in my book, it's an individual. That one point of difference, but one I could cope with.
My objection to Mr Rudd comes from the heart, not the head. He is a devout evangelist hillsong christian. Now I accept many compromises reguarding ones own nature must be made to be a successful leader, but why is Mr Rudd really going to church? If it is because hillsong is a massive powerful new movement, and it's numbers mean the difference between victory and failure, then I understand. It's ignoble, but understandable to me in the nasty world of politics.
But it's if Mr Rudd actually beleives in the evangelists preachings that I am concerned. Does he really believe that Jesus wants him to be filthy rich so that he can provide more to the evangelist? Does Jesus really want him to download a hillsong ringtone? Does Jesus really need him to vote for Guy on Australian Idol? Does Jesus really think the arabs are the enemy? Funny, I recall being told Jesus leaned toward peace and love. Must have been a hippy who told me that, because now we know Jesus wants us to live like kings and use the rest of the world as slaves.
The thing is I know he doesn't believe that crap. He's extremely intelligent and his policies, if they were that of a christian, would be those of a traditional church, one that cares for the needy. I don't understand traditional christians either, but they seem less focused on one's own material wealth, and slightly less focussed on total global domination.
So I'll vote for a lier, but not an honest hillsong evangelists. I've got a couple of days to work this out.
