5 YEARS LATER.
ring, ring, ring
“Hello?”
“Hello, is this Jang, Wooyoung. Father of Jang Lee Seol?”
Wooyoung sat up in his desk chair.
“Yes.”
“This is Mrs. Namkung, Lee Seol’s teacher. It is a pleasure to finally talk to you, but unfortunately I am calling under stressful circumstances.”
“What happened?”
“You have to come and pick her up from school. She has been suspended for the rest of the week?”
“What?! What did she do?”
“Sir. I would rather talk to you in person.”
“I’m on my way.”
“Thank you.”
Wooyoung hung up his cell phone. He immediately packed up his things and headed down the hall to Khun’s office.
“Khun.”
He looked up from his computer and smiled.
“Hi.”
Even after all their years of marriage, Wooyoung still sent butterflies to Khun’s stomach. Wooyoung smiled back.
“We have an emergency. Lee Seol’s school just called. She got suspended.”
“Are you serious? What did she do?”
“I don’t know. They want to talk to in person.”
“Alright, give me a sec.”
“I’m gonna get the car.”
“Ok.”

Wooyoung walked through the front door, followed by Lee Seol and Khun. Their daughter began to climb the steps when Khun stopped her.
“The couch. Now.”
Lee Seol descended the steps, dropped her bag and then plopped on the couch, her feet dangling off the side. Both Wooyoung and Khun sat down on the coffee table, in front of her.
“What happened, Lee Seol?” Wooyoung asked.
She fumbled with her fingers, under the stares of her fathers.
“I punched Lee Sari.”
“Ok.” Khun said, having been told this much from her teacher. “Why?”
“Because of you.”
“Me?”
“You and Appa Wooyoung.”
Khun looked at Wooyoung, thoroughly confused.
“Sari started it. He said his two dads were real because both of them were married to his mommy. AND I TOLD HIM! I told him that you were married to Appa Wooyoung but he just said that “you’re a sissy, a punk, a pretend mommy!” so I said “here’s a pretend punch” and I punched him. I’m sorry.”
Khun scooped her up and sat her on his lap, tears leaving his eyes.
“You know fighting’s wrong don’t you?”
“Don’t cry Appa Khun. I’m sorry.”
“Lee Seol, you stood up for Appa Khun and I and we are greatful. But you shouldn’t have hit Sari.” Wooyoung chimed in. “So I want you to go up to your room and write a letter to Sari, saying sorry.”
“Why? He was being mean.”
“I know.” Khun ran his fingers through her hair. “But just because he was being mean, doesn’t mean you have to. So go ahead upstairs.”
“Ok.”
Lee Seol slid off of Khun’s lap. She grabbed her bag off of the couch and climbed the stairs. Her sandal clad feet, click-clacking as she went. Wooyoung bent down and placed his face in his hands.
“How did we get so lucky?” Khun asked.
“I don’t know.”
Although Khun couldn’t see him, he knew Wooyoung was crying too. They didn’t have to say it for both of them to understand how the other was feeling? They felt guilty. Their five year old daughter had just taken on an adult situation; one she never asked to be placed in.
“Is this how it’s always gonna be for her?” Wooyoung asked, sitting up, wiping his face. “Is she always going to have to defend herself because of her gay fathers?”
“I hope not.”
Wooyoung stared at his husband.
“Don’t worry, Wooyoung. She’s a smart girl. To be honest, I’ve never been so proud of her.”
“Me neither.” He laughed. “God, what are we gonna do when she gets to high school?”
“We can’t shelter her. She’s gonna have to go through whatever to grow. And we’ll be right there with her.”
“You’re right.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*
“She punched him?”
“Yup.”
“Hell yeah! Where is she?”
Damni looked around the backyard for Lee Seol. Khun, Wooyoung and Lee Seol had traveled to “Thainess” for Khun’s parent’s 40th wedding anniversary. Lee Seol was currently running around with her younger cousins. Benji’s twin girl’s Isra and Tola who were 4, Kamala’s daughter Mali who was also 4 and her son Aroon who was 3 and Kaufi’s triplet’s Aran, Niran, and Kiet, who were 2. It seemed like after Damni gave birth to Lee Seol, all the other women of the family became magically pregnant; all except for Sharleen and Lalana, who were just expecting now.
“Lee Seol.” She yelled.
Lee Seol was too busy running from a masked Wooyoung to hear her aunt calling her.
“Damni. Eric.”
“Oh yeah.”
Damni looked down at her sleeping son, in her arms. He wasn’t fazed by the noise.
“Sorry. I’m just so proud of her! I mean you’d never think a five year old could handle that type of situation. Of course, you’d never think a five year old could start a situation like that either. Just let me run into Lee Sari on the street.”
Khun laughed.
“Wooyoung and I said the same thing. Minus the running into Sari part. We just wish it didn’t have to happen at all.”
“Yeah. It’s sad, but you guys have an amazing relationship with her. Not many would have chosen to be completely honest with their child at such a young age out of fear, but your daughter is special. She was held by me!” Damni laughed.
“Yeah, yeah.”
They heard Lee Seol scream in the background and looked over to find her and her cousins ganging up on Wooyoung.
“HELP!” he screamed.
“Oh my god.” Khun laughed.
“Aran, Niran, Kiet!!” Kaufi yelled walking out of the kitchen “Get off your uncle!”
“DINNER TIME!!!!!!” Alak shouted from the grill.
Lee Seol helped her cousins up off of her father and then grabbed his hand, trying to help him up. Wooyoung succeeded in getting up, but when she wasn’t looking he grabbed her and pushed her in the grass. He then laid on her. She giggled.
“Appa Khun!!!” she yelled.
Khun looked at them and laughed.
“What are you two doing?”
“Appa Khun, save me! Appa Wooyoung is too heavy for me to beat alone!”
Khun laughed.
“Ok.”
Khun charged and rolled Wooyoung off of Lee Seol. She got up and then jumped on Wooyoung and Khun.
“You crud ball!! I just helped you!” Khun laughed.
“I got you both!”
“You did!!” Wooyoung laid satisfied.
“Alright.” Khun hit her on the butt. “Come on, it’s dinner time.”
Lee Seol climbed off of them and Khun helped Wooyoung up. They then walked over to the table set up outside, Lee Seol attached to the bottom of Khun’s right leg. Once everyone was seated, Alak and Anchali stood up to make a toast.
“Here ye, Here ye”
Everyone laughed.
“To our beautiful children, children-in-law’s and grandchildren thank you for making these past 40 years. They have been full of ups and downs, high and lows but in the end we always find our way back to each other and end up doing the right thing.” Anchali spoke.
“Benji, Kush, Isra and Tola. Kamala, Cam, Mali and Aroon. Lalana, Kasem and our grandson to be! Kaufi, Nate, Aran, Niran and Kiet. Damni, Eric and Eric Jr. Sharleen, Niem and our granddaughter to be. And last: Khun, Wooyoung and Lee Seol.”
Alak and Anchali raised their glasses.
“We love you so much and you have made life an adventure. Even when we thought we had lost two of you…”
Khun grabbed Lee Seol’s hand.
“It was one of the worst experiences to take part in, but it’s still something that we have grown from and that has made us stronger. Thank you so much for being in our lives. This day is for all of you.”
