WEEK TWENTY-EIGHT
“I don’t want this SHIT! Oh, sorry, THIS STUFF!!!”
Damni looked at her plate of food.
“Damni it’s what you ordered.”
Khun spoke across the table. They all decided they needed some time away from the house, so dinner out would be just the trick, but Damni was starting to cause a scene.
“No it’s not! Please take this back!” she spoke to the waitress.
“I’m really sorry about this.” Khun apologized.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“Because you’re an embarrassment!”
“Um…whose fault is it that I’m like this?!?! My brother had to have a baby and out of THE GOODNESS OF MY HEART, I GOT PREGNANT FOR YOU!! This is your fault!”
The waitress looked at Khun, disgusted.
“It sounds a lot worse than it is.”
Wooyoung sat quietly next to Khun, eating his french fries.
“Look, can you bring me out some pickles, ketchup and vanilla bean ice cream. All separately, I’ll mix them myself. Thank You.”
Their waitress only nodded her head. She picked up Damni’s last order and walked away.
“Why are you being like this?” Khun asked.
“What are you talking about?”
Damni had begun pouring salt onto her bread plate and licking it up with her finger.
“You clearly ordered chicken and now you want pickles and icecream?”
“Um…they’re called craving Khun. I’m 28 weeks pregnant; didn’t you think weird shit would start to happen?”
“She has a point.” Wooyoung chimed in.
“So what is it, gang up on Khun day?”
“Here we go.”
Damni rolled her eyes, but they never returned to the front.
“Damni?”
Her eyes began to flicker back and forth and she began to shake.
“Oh my god.”
Khun darted out of his seat to his sister’s side, just in time to catch her from falling off of her seat. She was shaking violently.
“Hello. We need an ambulance at Raven Restaurant. My friend is seizing . She’s also pregnant, please hurry.”
“Is anybody here a doctor?” Khun yelled.
No one responded.
“What are we gonna do?”
“We have to wait.”
“Oh my god.”
Khun sat on the floor, with his sister seizing in his lap. He rubbed her forehead, repeatedly.
“What the…”
Khun looked down at his pants;they were soaked. He looked at Wooyoung.
“I think her water just broke.”
“Oh god.”
Wooyoung scooped Damni up from Khun’s lap and ran with her out of the restaurant. They would just have to take her to the hospital themselves. Once out of the restaurant, the ambulance pulled up.
“Are you Wooyoung?”
“Yes! We have to hurry. Her water just broke.”
“Alright.”
Wooyoung climbed into the back of the ambulance, placing Damni on the stretcher.
“Go, I’ll follow in the car.” Khun said.
“Ok.” Wooyoung nodded.
Khun closed the back doors and ran to the car.
“How many weeks is she?” the EMT asked, placing a mask on Damni’s mouth.
She stopped seizing, but she wasn’t moving.
“28.” Wooyoung answered.
“Well, that’s good. After 22 weeks, babies are usually able to function on their own, but with her seizing, you’re still going to be in for a long haul.”
Wooyoung looked at Damni, swiping her hair away from her sweaty forehead.
“Are you the father?”
Wooyoung looked at the EMT.
“Yes.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*
“We’re both the fathers!” Khun yelled. “Just let us in!”
“I’m sorry, sir. No matter what the situation is, I can only let one of you in.”
“Khun just go in. She’s your sister.”
“But…”
“Just go.”
“Ok.”
The nurse handed Khun a dressing gown, a mask, shoe covers and a hair cover. Wooyoung helped him tie the down and placed the covers on his feet.
“Just make sure she’s ok.” Wooyoung kissed Khun.
“Ok.”
Khun turned to the nurse.
“I’m ready.”
“This way.” Khun followed.
Wooyoung plopped down in a chair in the waiting room. The nurse led Khun into the surgical den. She prepared herself and then led him through double doors and into the surgical room. Khun looked at his sister, lying on the table, motionless.
“We have to get this baby out. Nurse Kim, are you ready?”
The nurse that led Khun into the room was now on the other side of the room, preparing an incubator.
“Yes, doctor.”
“Mr. Horvejkul, would you please step over here.” Another nurse addressed him.
“Yes.”
Khun walked over to the nurse.
“Ok, let’s begin.”
The doctor made an incision towards the bottom of Damni’s stomach. As gruesome as the sight was, Khun couldn’t bring himself to look away. He had to make sure both the baby and Damni were ok. The doctor, handed his scalpel back to his nurse and began to reach inside of Damni’s stomach.
“Ok, we have a problem.”
Khun mentally began to panic.
“The umbilical cord is wrapped, and it’s breech.”
“What is he saying?” Khun asked the nurse, trying not to yell.
“The umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby’s neck and it is in the wrong position. Instead of head first, the baby is feet first.”
“So what’s going to happen?”
“We have to get the umbilical cord from around its neck, but since this is a c-section, feet first shouldn’t be that big a problem.”
Khun sighed.
“Ok.”
“Alright, I’m moving the umbilical cord.”
Khun felt like he was on pens and needles. The doctor was working completely blind and all he wanted was for his sister and baby to be alright.
“Ok, it’s done. Let’s get this baby out.”
Everyone began to move at a faster pace now. The nurse with the incubator came closer to the surgical table. Another nurse came prepped with towels. Everything was just happening so quickly.
“Here we go.”
The doctor, pulled and Khun saw two feet, then a belly and two arms and then finally a head. The doctor handed the baby off to the nurse next to him. She wiped the baby down and then placed her in the incubator, where another nurse began to take her vital signs.
“Alright, let’s sew her up.”
“Doctor.”
“Yes?”
“I’m not getting a heartbeat or a pulse.”
Khun’s eyes almost fell out of their sockets.
“What?” he asked.
“Please, take him outside.” The doctor ordered.
“What? No!”
Khun struggled against the nurse, leading him out of the room.
“Wait. I’ve got a heartbeat. It’s faint, but it’s there.”
Khun sighed.
“Alright, get her down to the NICU. Quick.”
Just then Damni’s heart machine went off.
“What the…”
“She’s flat lining, Doctor.”
The nurse began to push Khun out of the room again. He didn’t put up a fight this time. He didn’t have any strength left. He watched as the doctor and his nurses tried everything they could to save his sister. No tears leaving his eyes; there was nothing but shock written on her face. Why was this happening to them? It was a question that no one could answer, and probably would never be able to.
WEEK THIRTY
“Jang, Lee Seol” Wooyoung whispered to his daughter glass incubator.
Khun was sleeping in the chair next to them. It had been two weeks since everything had happened and both Lee Seol and Damni were still unconscious. Both of them had died that day, two weeks ago, but they both managed to come back.
“What are you thinking?” he asked.
Wooyoung drew hearts on the glass for her. He wanted her to wake up and see them and know that all around her was love. Of course to her, they’d probably just look like smudges or she wouldn’t be able to see them at all, but it was the thought that counted.
“You wanna know what I’m thinking?” Wooyoung didn’t wait for an answer. “I’m thinking of how weird it is that I love you so much, yet I don’t know you. Emotions are so funny. I could think of no other place to be then right here with you, because you’re my world right now. You and Damni have to get better. You guys are a part of me and Khun. So promise me Jang, Lee Seol, that you’ll get better. Cuz, you have to grow big and strong.”
Wooyoung laughed.
“I just pictured you going on your first date.” He laughed again. “That’s gonna be one lucky guy who gets you, but then again, he’ll have to deal with us, so maybe he won’t be so lucky.”
“What are you doing?”
Wooyoung turned around and saw Khun stretching. He looked at his watch.
“It’s 4 in the morning. Do you want to sleep?”
Wooyoung just shook his head.
“I’m thinking about the future with Lee Seol.”
Khun smiled.
“Really? Like what?”
“Her first date.”
“Oh.” Khun laughed. “The poor guy who has to deal with us.”
Wooyoung laughed.
“I was just saying that.”
Khun stood up next to Wooyoung and kissed him.
“Hopefully she finds someone like you.”
“I am pretty perfect, aren’t I?” he chuckled.
“Yes, you are.”
WEEK THRITY-TWO
“Damni.”
All of the Horvejkuls piled into her hospital room. Wooyoung stayed down in the NICU with Lee Seol, giving them the time they needed to be with Damni. Kaufi sat on her bed.
“Dam, come on hun, you have to wake up.” She faintly spoke.
Out of everyone, Kaufi was definitely taking Damni’s coma the worst. Even Khun, who felt completely at fault, could never understand the pain that Kaufi was going through. Her other half was lying in front of her, motionless. No one would ever understand. She grabbed Damni’s hand and squeezed it, hoping for a response. When she got nothing she squeezed even harder.
“Kaufi.” Khun called.
“What?” She said sharply.
“I don’t think you should do that.”
“Because, you know everything?”
Khun backed down. Kaufi blamed him, entirely.
“Kaufi don’t talk to him like that.” Benji chimed in. “He’s going through as much pain as you are.”
“This is his fault!”
“Kaufi!!”
“I swear, if she doesn’t wake up, I will never forgive you.”
Kaufi got up and walked out of the room.
WEEK THIRTY-FOUR
Wooyoung fell asleep in the NICU, his hand on top of Lee Seol’s incubator. He and khun rarely left the hospital, except to grab spare clothes or put in a few hours at work. They had gotten all of their projects transferred to other leaders. They were two of the best but their boss understood what they were going through and granted them as much time as they needed.
“Wooyoung.”
His eyes fluttered open. He rubbed them a few times and let them come into focus.
“Mom. Hey.”
“How are you sweetie?”
He looked at his daughter. Still not moving and breathing through a tube.
“I’ve been better.” He tried to smile.
“I know. That was a dumb question. I’m sorry.”
“No, it wasn’t mom.”
Wooyoung got up from his seat and hugged his mother.
“How are you?” he asked.
“I’m just so worried about you.”
“I’m fine mom. Really.” He smiled. “Khun and I are making the best of this situation.”
“When did my little Wooboo get so grown?”
“Mom, Wooboo?” he chuckled.
“Sorry.”
Mrs. Jang, turned to Lee Seol’s incubator.
“She’s absolutely beautiful. It’s amazing how much she looks like you and Khun.”
“Yeah.” Wooyoung agreed.
He looked at his daughter and noticed how much she had developed since her birth. Her hair, her fingers and toes and even her tummy, all of it was progressing at natural speeds, she just wasn’t waking up.
“How is Damni?”
“The same. There has been any motion from her either.”
“What exactly happened in the delivery room?”
“Well, Khun said Damni was unconscious before they even performed the c-section, but as soon as Lee Seol was out, she wasn’t breathing and they couldn’t find a pulse, but then they got one and at that moment Damni’s heart began to fail. Khun said it was like Damni gave up her life to Lee Seol. Do you think that’s possible?”
“I don’t know, but who’s to say that it isn’t. Damni loves both you and Khun very much and she did this for you guys, so it makes sense, in a way.”
“I don’t know. I just want both of them to wake up. I want to take my daughter home and show her, her room, and leave her messages on her chalk board. I want all of this to be over.”
“Wooyoung, you just have to believe that everything will work out fine. You’re doing all that you can and that all anyone can ask from you.”
WEEK THIRTY-SIX
“I miss you guys.”
“We’re right downstairs.” Wooyoung chuckled.
“I know, but I feel like I haven’t seen you in a year.”
“Do you want me to come up?”
“No. Stay with Lee Seol. She needs you right now. My sister needs me.”
“Do you want me to stay on the phone?”
“Yes. You don’t have to speak, just keep it on.”
“Ok.”
Wooyoung placed the phone down on top of Lee Seol’s incubator.
“The sun’ll come out. Tomorrow. Bet your bottom dollar, that tomorrow, there’ll be sun.”
“Are you singing Annie?” Khun laughed thru the phone.
“SHHHHHHHHH!!!”
Khun laughed.
“Sorry.”
Wooyoung continued to sing and draw hearts on her incubator.
“Just thinking about, tomorrow. Clears away the cob webs and the sorrow. Till there’s none.”
“Oh my god.” Wooyoung and Khun said in unison.
“Damni moved.”
“So did, Lee Seol.”
“Keep singing!”
“When I’m stuck with a day, that’s grey and lonely. I just stick out my chin and grin and say, Oh.”
Both Damni and Lee Seol wiggled their fingers.
“The sun’ll come out tomorrow, but you gotta hang on till tomorrow. Come what may. Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow. You’re only a day away. Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow. You’re only, a day, a way.”
Wooyoung almost stared holes into the incubator. Lee Seol had opened her eyes half way through the end of the song. He had never seen her eyes and he had to say, they were the most beautiful things he’s ever seen. She stared up at him and for a second, it looked like she was going to start crying, but then she smiled.
“Wooyoung! Damni’s awake.”
Wooyoung didn’t respond.
“Wooyoung!”
“So is Lee Seol.”
“Oh my God.”
“Khun, she’s awake. She has the most beautiful eyes.” He cried. “She’s awake. She’s awake.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Both of them became inaudible through the tears, but the sound of Damni cursing them, was quite prominent.
“You two are disgusting.”
WEEK THIRTY-EIGHT
Khun stepped over the threshold of their house, Lee Seol wrapped up in his arms. He was followed by Wooyoung, Wooyoung’s mother and sister and then all of his family.
“You guys really didn’t have to come.” Wooyoung assured them.
“Oh, shut up Wooyoung.” His mother spoke. “We were not going to miss, our granddaughters first day home.”
“Yeah.” Said Alak, with his camcorder. “We can’t miss this.”
Wooyoung rolled his eyes and followed Khun up the stairs. They all piled into Lee Seol’s nursery.
“Oh, this is sooo cute!” Khun sisters began to squeal.
“SHHH!”
Khun began to place Lee Seol on her changing station, to unwrap her, when his father stopped him.
“Wait. I can’t see.”
He shuffled around everyone and got closer to Khun.
“Are you good?” Khun asked.
“Yeah, go ahead.”
He place Lee Seol down and unwrapped her blanket.
“Look at her footie’s!”
“SHHH!”
Wooyoung then picked her up and carried her over to her crib and place her in, gently.
“That was perfect,” Alak. “Except, you were kind fo in my light, Khun. Can we film it again?”
“Alright, everyone out. Let’s go. Damni, you need to get some rest. The rest of you place remove yourselves.”
“You’re so bossy, Khun!” Benji yelled, descending the steps.
“Yeah, well, whatever.”
Khun and Wooyoung pushed everyone out of the house, except for Damni.
“See, ya!”
Wooyoung closed the door.
“You, up the stairs.”
Khun said to Damni.
“Alright, alright. I’m going.”
She climbed the steps, slowly and when she finally disappeared from view, Wooyoung and Khun plopped down on their couch. Khun laid his head across Wooyoung’s lap and closed his eyes. Wooyoung leaned down and kissed him on the forehead and then closed his eyes. Having not slept in almost eleven weeks, within minutes they were sleep.
