SECOND TRIMESTER
WEEK SIXTEEN
Damni turned onto her side. She shimmied one arm under her and the other over. When he hand hit her stomach she felt something.
“What the…”
She ripped the cover off of her body and rolled on her back. Her room was completely dark, so she had to feel around.
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!”
Wooyoung and Khun rushed into Damni’s room and turned on the light.
“What’s wrong?!” asked Khun.
“Look at this!!!”
They looked at Damni’s stomach. It was protruding a bit.
“That wasn’t there yesterday!!”
Khun rolled his eyes and left.
“What’s wrong with him?” she asked.
Wooyoung walked over to her bed and sat down.
“Exactly what we thought might happen.”
“Really?” Damni sat up. “I thought everything was going good.”
“Honestly, I don’t think we could have avoided it. No matter what we did.”
“I feel really bad now.”
“Don’t. He’ll be fine. In the mean time, I’ll make a doctor’s appointment for you. Maybe we can find out the sex of the baby.”
“Legit?”
“Yeah. I remember Khun saying something about the sixteenth week being a good week to get everything checked. I’ll call in the morning.”
“Ok.”
“Alright.” Wooyoung got up from the bed, turned the light back off and left.
Damni lay down and placed both of her hands on her stomach.
“Hiya!” she whispered. “Look, I know that right now everything’s a bit messed up, but don’t worry. Your daddy’s love you and so does your aunt. They are gonna love you the best that they can. Oh and when your poppa khun acts like a dick…oh crap…I mean a butt, you can always call me. Somehow, I know that you can understand me and that you’ll remember this.” She smiled.

“Oh. It’s cold.”
“Sorry.” Dr. Lee chuckled as he spread the ultrasound gel across her stomach. “Unfortunately, we can’t warm it up.”
Damni lay on the hospital bed, waiting patiently. Khun and Wooyoung stood next to her. Dr. Lee pressed the probe to her stomach. Immediately the heartbeat hit their ears. Khun grabbed Wooyoung’s hand. Wooyoung was surprised but he didn’t object. This was the most affection Khun had showed him in a week. Maybe this baby was starting to bring them together, instead of driving them apart.
Damni looked at the screen. The baby was quite more visible than it was in her last ultrasound picture. She had stayed up most of the night talking to the baby. Just telling it what life would probably be like with two fathers and how it is in JeJu Island. She was sooo nervous from the possibility of finding out the sex of the baby that she couldn’t get back to sleep.
“So, Doc. Do you think we could find out the sex of the baby?”
“Yeah, could we?” asked Khun, who was still clinging to Khun’s hand.
Dr. Lee looked at the screen and then back at Khun, Wooyoung and Damni.
“Are you sure you want to know? You don’t want to be surprised?
“No!” they responded in unison.
Dr. Lee laughed. He pushed a button on the ultrasound machine and out popped a picture of the baby.
“Congratulations,” He handed them the photo. “You are having a baby girl.”
Damni’s mouth dropped. Khun hugged Wooyoung.
“Are you sure?” She stared at the photo.
“Is there something wrong?” Dr. Lee asked.
“Yeah, I want a boy.”
“Well, it’s a good thing the baby isn’t staying with you, isn’t it?” Khun asked, bringing Damni back to reality.
“You’re right. Sorry.”
WEEK EIGHTEEN
Khun opened Damni’s door and turned on the light.
“Get out!!” Damni threw her pillow at Khun’s head.
“It’s time to get up. You have to take you vitamins and I have a surprise for you.” Khun walked over and sat on Damni’s bed.
“I don’t want to take those stupid vitamins. They taste like ass and feet! And I don’t care about a surprise, just let me sleep!!”
“I’m sorry but you have to take them, for the baby. Even if the surprise is shopping?!?!?”
Damni opened her eyed.
“Shopping? For baby stuff?”
“Yeah.” Khun smiled. “And maternity clothes and anything else we may need.”
“Alright. I’ll take the damn pills.”
Khun laughed.
“Alright. Take your time up here and I’ll be waiting downstairs.
“Ok.”
~*~*~*~*~*
“Oh, what about this!!!!”
Damni pointed at an overly frilly bassinet that came with interchangeable ribbons and bins that you store below the basket.
“Um…no.” Khun turned back around and went back to grabbing outlet plugs.
“Why?”
Khun turned back around.
“Because if we buy that, the baby will then be forced to die of embarrassment and you suffering for nine months will have been for nothing.”
Damni pouted at Khun.
“You’re such a buttfart! I don’t even know what color the baby’s room is going to be.”
“Oh, that reminds me. We need to buy paint. I was thinking a soft yellow and blue.”
“For a girl?”
“Yeah. Well, it’s just the base. Wooyoung and I decided to do a mural on her wall anyway. And we’re gonna paint one wall completely in chalkboard paint. So that she’ll wake up to messages every morning.”
“I’m glad you guys were able to work everything out.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You guy just seemed so distant lately. I figured you were fighting and you made you recently.”
“So you and Wooyoung have been talking about me?”
Damni could smell trouble. She quickly walked over to a playpen and climbed in.
“What about this? It would be cute with blue and yellow.” She sat down.
Khun pushed his cart down the aisle and then disappeared from Damni’s sight.
“Shit…oh, sorry.” She patted her stomach.
Damni stood up in the playpen and looked over the side. It looked a lot easier to get into than it did to get out.
“Help!”
One of the workers walked by.
“Hey you! BOY! Help me out of here.”
“Ma’am, you shouldn’t be in there in the first place.” He said leaning onto the playpen, for Damni to hoist herself out.
“Well, where were you when I climbed in? Huh?!” Damni put both of her feet on the floor. “Do your job!”
She ran down the aisle, as fast as she could, without threat to the baby and then turned where Khun disappeared.
“Khun! Nichkhun where are you.”
She looked up and down every single aisle she passed, finally finding him in the last one.
“What is wrong with you?”
“Oh, please. Like you care about me.”
“Where is this coming from?! Would I be pregnant right now, if I didn’t care about you? You’re my brother for Christ sakes!”
Someone pushed their cart past them and made a face.
“That came out wro…why are you listening to our conversation?!”
“That’s what I thought in the beginning but now I’m starting to see otherwise.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You want Wooyoung!!”
Damni stared at him.
“You’re mental!”
“Sure I am. Just leave me alone. Why don’t you go find Wooyoung and talk about me some more.”
“You know, I would, but you have the car keys!!”
Khun dug in his pocket, took out the keys and threw them at her, hitting her in the stomach.
“OW!”
It was as if Khun had been pulled out of a trance, the second she screamed. He reached out his hand, but she backed away.
“I’m fine!” she rubbed the spot the keys hit. “Look, I don’t know what has gotten into you, but I don’t like it. I’m doing this for you. You! My little brother! I would never try to come between you and Wooyoung. So when you get over this, you let me know.”
Damni walked back down the aisle.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m going to pick out the rest of the baby furniture.”
“But you can’t carry it all.”
The same worker who helped Damni out of the playpen, walked by.
“Hey! BOY! Come help me shop!”
WEEK TWENTY
Damni stood in the baby’s room, facing the wall closest to the door, with a paint brush in her hand.
“And this stuff is safe for me to breathe in?”
Khun stood across the room at another wall.
“Yeah, it’s fumeless and quick dry, so you and the baby should be fine.”
“Oh, ok. So this stuff is really chalkboard?” Damni bent down and stirred the paint with her brush.
“Yup.” Wooyoung answered, painting another wall of the room.
“So, if I painted my hand, it would be, like, a chalkboard?”
Wooyoung laughed.
“Try it and see.” He answered.
“No, I think I’ll pass.” She laughed.
Damni started at the bottom of the wall, making sure to spread the chalkboard evenly. Wooyoung who was in charge of the yellow paint, stood on his step stool, in order to reach the top of the wall. He brought his brush down and dipped it in paint, but when he went to start painting again, his elbow hit the paint can, knocking it off of the table it sat on. Both Khun and Damni jumped.
“Sorry.”
“Oh my god.” Damni spoke, holding her stomach.
“What’s wrong?” Khun asked.
“No, I’m fine, but I think the baby just jumped. Like she got scared too.”
“Are you sure?” Wooyoung asked. “Maybe she just moved with you.”
“Maybe.”
~*~*~*~*~*
“I was right!”
Damni lay out on the couch, one of her pregnancy book in her face.
“About?” Wooyoung asked as he sat on the floor, the pieces of the crib spread out around him.
“The baby did jump. It says here that around week twenty ‘the baby may startle in reaction to loud noises. Amazingly, she can actually hear noises outside of the womb. Familiar voices, music, and sounds that baby becomes accustomed to during her development stages often are calming after birth.’ See!! Oh, it also says here that the baby’s heart is growing faster, so we should be able to tell the difference from my heart beat and her’s. You wanna try?”
“Sure what do we have to do?”
“Um…” Damni cruised each line with her eyes, memorizing the instructions. “Ok is says to lay flat on my back, that’s done. Then locate my heartbeat. Do my neck, it’s easier.”
Wooyoung pressed two fingers to Damni’s neck.
“Ok.”
“Now, place your hand on my stomach and see if you can feel the difference.”
Damni lifted her shirt, just above her protruding stomach. Wooyoung placed his hand in the middle.
“Oh my gosh, why are your hands so cold?”
“Sorry.” He laughed.
He moved his hand around some more.
“I don’t feel any…I feel it!”
“Really?”
Damni pushed him away, replacing his hands with her own.
“Oh my god!” she yelled. “Khun come feel this!!”
Khun came running down the steps.
“What is it?”
He was shocked at the fact that his sister was calling him. Ever since he had accused and hit her a few weeks ago, she had kept her distance from him. Only saying what needed to be said.
“We found the baby’s heartbeat.” Wooyoung filled him in.
Khun felt a pang of jealousy.
They found it together. The parents.
He pushed the thought from his mind and sat down next to Wooyoung on the floor.
“Here.” Damni grabbed his hands.
She positioned them where hers were moments before.
“Wow.” Was all he could manage.
Everything was starting to feel real.
“I know, right?!?”
