The trouble with spending time outdoors

is that I always, ALWAYS end up coming up with ideas. Project after project after project floats through my mind. I start to daydream. Plans formulate. Plans for amazing landscaping and exterior home improvements. Then I hit the brick wall of realilty: having no funds to see them through.

For five years I’ve lived here, and the very first thing on my to-do list then, as it still is now, is to simply COVER MY PORCH. I’m not talking anything fancy for the front porch anymore. At this point, I just want some timbers, a frame, and a sheet of corrugated metal over the back porch. That’s all! It still hasn’t happened, though I am still as determined as ever to see that it does. Life and emergencies do get in the way, and that can’t be helped. I realize that. I just hope that now that I’m working any and every hour they’ll let me at work, that I can take care of necessities, urgencies, fun stuff (our non-negotiable upcoming vacation. Which I still guess I need to blog about, but keep thinking that I’ve already done so) AND home improvements.

Well, while I’m already here, I might as well spill the ideas I’ve come up with. Some are obviously old ideas/goals that never got put into action:
  • cover the back porch.
  • have an area near the driveway and back porch graded, leveled, and graveled to give us a parking pad.
  • create a patio area off the back porch using concrete pavers
  • fence the back yard in
  • level about an 18×18′ area of the back yard so we can put a cheap 15×15′ above ground pool in
(we had an ULTRA-CHEAP pool last year, but the yard slopes to bad to try to put that one, or any other one for that matter, back up)
  • add more landscaping to the front yard as I can
  • create a courtyard off the front porch, and eventually cover them both pergola-style.

So those are my exterior home improvement goals. Interior home improvement project goals coming soon!

How weird is it that when it started to rain a while ago, I ran outside just so I could smell the wet pavement? It seems like we haven’t gotten rain in forever, so this little thunderstorm that just blew through here was so nice….
