One of our friends is off next weekend to chair a panel "WisCon" -- the Feminist Sci-Fi/Fantasy Convention -- in Madison, WI. Catherine's panel meets Saturday afternoon, and is entitled: "Parallel Universes: Lesbian Characters in Fantasy and Science Fiction, Panelists: Catherine Lundoff [our pal], Jean Roberta, Nancy Johnston, JoSelle Vanderhooft."
Catherine writes that "Xena and the fanfiction related to the show created a whole new world of lesbian science fiction and fantasy, including new publishers, writers and tropes. Known as 'lesfic,'" it evidently "flourishes alongside but outside of the mainstream of science fiction fandom...authors like Joanna Russ, Nicola Griffith, Kelly Eskridge, Melissa Scott and Lisa Barnett, Severna Park, and most recently Malinda Lo, have been writing lesbian characters that are read and celebrated in genre..."

I wish I could be there, but we're supposed to fly to Italy on Friday -- volcano permitting! (How's that for a sci-fi touch?? And, yes, there WILL be lesbians -- us, at least -- aboard the aircraft!)
