Self Portrait of a Polish Girl

Self Portrait, originally uploaded by K a t a r z y n a.

There's no info on Catherine's Flickr profile, so I wandered to various connections she offered, and happily a fashion site turned up some interesting details at -- http://lookbook.nu/look/52974-#look_feedback

According to it, she is Polish and about 19 (well, she was 18 as of December 2008, anyway...). That, today, seems appropriate, with the ghastly air crash yesterday in Russia that killed the President of Poland and about 90 others in an official delegation. She -- and all Poles -- have my deep sympathy for the tragic loss.

The press accounts make the disaster even more poignant: the delegation was to join the Russians in a commemoration of the loss of 20,000 Polish officers in the notorious Katyn Forest massacre in 1940. Such reconciliation was a long time coming, but both Russia and Poland obviously wanted to smooth things over. The plane went down not far from the site of the memorial.

So sad! History demands a high price sometimes!

Please see my note on the following post regarding Stephanie commenting here before she could have seen my remarks on the tragedy. (I guess I won't upload photos before I write my commentaries in the future.) Sorry!
