Russia has brokered a deal (shades of Trumpsky!) to create truce zones in Syria. It actually sounds workable.
Russia, plus Turkey and Iran (call them the "Syrian bad guys" -- SBGs), will have "armed foreign monitors on the ground in Syria," according to the Washington Post this morning. (The piece is buried on p. A17 for some reason.)
The so-called "de-escalation zones... will be enforced in areas still to be determined on maps to emerge a month from now." The whole deal is to begin functioning by early July.
An American administration more adroit than Trumpsky's shambling mess would perhaps have got the US out there supporting what seems to be a good idea.
But, whatever! Here's hoping it works -- even though it would ratify the SBG in control of the whole country, presuming continued Russian dominance in Assad-ruled regions. But, meanwhile, protected civilians!!
