Ergenikon -- strategic buzzword
I read an op-ed in today's Post that Turkish President Erdogan in 2008 had prosecuted secularist military officers in "the now-infamous Ergenekon case." He forced thousands of officers out of service; "hundreds ended up in jail."
Puzzled by the word, I checked it out on Wiki. It refers to the "foundation myth" regarding the Turkish nationality. It goes all the way back to founding of the Turkic "Khaganate" (the rulership of an ethnic group, ancestors to the Turkomen).
The myth tells about a great crisis...following a military defeat, the Turks took refuge in the legendary Ergenekon valley where they were trapped for four centuries. They were finally released when a blacksmith created a passage by melting rock, allowing the gray wolf Asena to lead them out." The mythical valley became the capital of the Turkic Khaganate.I
