For Windows gone-silly update function, I switched it down to the minimalist option that it offers (search for updates, but decide yourself when to download and install) because when it was made that way that updates also install when you try to shut the machine off, I got pretty pissed off by it. Also because of those updates in between ticked off that prepare to a Win 10 upgrade and that only implement Stasi functions into the system. Always before shutting the machine off needing to look up "what is an update for?", "can I install it without finding my computer fucked up next morning?", it was just annoying.
Since having it switched to this option, it really only notifies you of new patches, but it doesn't force the updates upon you when you only want to turn the thing off and hit the hay.
Can't say if that works for the systems above, but at least it helps in Win 7.

Very funny, K -- though I admit I'd never heard of Debian. But, whichever -- they're both free and well-backed.
