Sochi, viewed by an angry Russian

Feb 09, 2014 10:46

Just saw a bitter response to all the Western press yammering about the state of Sochi's hotels, which is tacky at best -- and Fox-Bad-News at worst! I looked up the evident recipient -- http://ekattri.tumblr.com/post/57160867734 She is a Brit named Kate, who's 18; she SURELY didn't expect THIS answer to her reblogging Kasparov's complaint. Namely, that journalists should look at deeper Russian problems with democracy, etc. -- not just bitch about the just-completed construction at Sochi.

‪#‎sochiproblems‬, your problems are irrelevant tbh [to be honest]. Given the general state of Russia outside of Moscow/St Petersburg, you’re lucky your hotels have roofs. I say this as a Russian who is bemused at the shock and horror you’re expressing at the state of the hotels; welcome to Russia, I guess. That’s what it’s like. That’s what the majority of this country lives like.

... What you’re seeing is merely a reflection of Russia as a whole (i.e. a shithole if you aren’t filthy rich). It’s a reflection of a massive problem.I’m angry and I can’t put my finger on why. Garry Kasparov sums it up pretty well, though.

not into it, not forgotten, shameless, stressed
