So the three of us -- including our friend visiting from London -- are heading to Vero Beach. Hit I-95 going out of Washington -- but it hit BACK, jammed full of vehicles with the very same idea: getting out of Dodge before the weather and the end-of-month snowbirds made it insane.
Some mix of inspirations, though, conspired to put everyone on the same highway at the same moment -- a Friday, which makes no sense. (The going-home folks from Christmas-with-the-family don't need to light out until Saturday or even Sunday; etc...)
After an hour got us only 10 miles, we got off 95, trying US1 which parallets it; however, -nothing doing! It was an even worse parking lot. It took us another hour to go 5 miles -- so we bailed, heading for Culpepper in the upper middle of Virginia. Then went cross-country toward Charlottsville, and cut back easterly, then skirting Richmond and finally checking on I95 above Petersburg. Still heavy traffic, but moving okay at last. Got into North Carolina by about 6:30 -- almost EIGHT hours to do what usually takes less than THREE!
Now, with a pleasant dinner and a few drinks, it's all back into perspective. We'll hit it early in the morning, and see how it goes...
hoi polloi,
no good,
all of them!,
damned
