According to NBC News just after midnight, the US Government Management and Budget director Sylvia Burwell saw no "clear indication" that Congress would reach an agreement to keep the government's lights on. "Agencies should now execute plans for an orderly shutdown due to the absence of appropriations," she wrote.
"This is a sad day for America," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on the Senate floor.
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives announced this evening it sought "to shift decision-making to a bipartisan 'conference' of lawmakers from both chambers" -- but Reid immediately rejected that plan. “We will not go to conference with a gun to our head," he said.
I see this simply as Republicans trying to escape public blame for the economic losses and personal hardship they have caused with these absurd tactics. I predict the public will, very soon, clamor for them to end the shut-down -- and they will fold and run for cover, passing a proper resolution to fund the government on a continuing basis. I also predict the Republicans will, as a consequence, lose badly in next year's House and Senate elections.
