working with the Mecca

Weird week to be sure.
I worked this week for 2 WHOLE DAYS! Thanks to a bank-holiday on the Monday and my pre booked annual leave on Wednesday and Thursday I only had to haul my tired carcass out of bed at horrible-o'clock on 2 occasions in the last 8.

Tuesday was so odd I can't remember what happened at all. I think I might have done something robotic but can't really remember. Yeah, I'm sure it was robotic. Either that or something scopy. Seriously guys, i think the dementia is starting to kick in now.. burble.

Yesterday was Friday. a day lamented with a high workload and zero competent staff. Yesterday was following that rule like a paranoid limpet. To the extent that when myself and another scrub nurse had to switch cases in order for me to work the Lasers (including using Dr. Evil speech marks whenever that word is mentioned) the surgeon of the Laser theatre was pleased that I'd arrived to save the day, not to mention his temper from the hands of the incompetent and the disinterested. Talking, playing on your phone, talking about playing on your phone will all incur the wrath of the Angry Surgeon.
Not to mention while you do this shit you aren't doing the other things.. LIKE YOUR JOB!!! I was running around trying to keep track of the paperwork and the details of the scopes and Lasers (we have paperwork up the wing-wang!) while they chatted.
In the end the surgeon told them to shut the hell up.
And when I had switched back with my friend to re-scrub for the big case in the adjacent theatre, the surgeon came to find me and apologise for his remarks to me, also to rib me for leaving him with the deadheads"Why can't I get the good staff?" he wondered aloud, looking at me grinning.

This made me feel very good. :)

The big case in question though was BIG. And bled. A lot.
Starting at 10am, we got off the table at 5pm. I hadn't peed, ate or drank in the interim and still feel the effects now.
But it was with Jimmy and it went fine, despite getting a facefull of pee from stent-blowback (ewwww!! I know - should have worn a visor *sigh*) near the end it all went well.
Tiring though.

And the good news is that I got another three day weekend cos, for some reason I'm not working at all on Monday. Just the way the shifts have fallen.
And soon we have the Jubilee Bank-Holiday. See, being British isn't so bad. Yeah we live on a damp, mossy, rock in the middle of the Atlantic with arguably the dullest, gloomiest weather on the planet. But we have a monarchy, and that entitles us to extra days off for "national holidays". And we have the welfare state. and free healthcare (for now). All we have to put up with is the global fact that we are British, dis everything we do or have ever done (even the good stuff), take nothing seriously, and be branded with the crime of creating Reality television and unleashing it upon the rest of the world.
Is this a good tradeoff?

robots breaking down, being an adult, scrubbing, scary surgeons, facing fears, responsibility
