i'm feeling better. but i have incurred the wrath of the PTB, and i've only been back in work for 6 horus so far.
i'm sure that's some type of record somewhere.
They put a note up for volunteers for overtime this saturday morning. just one case, should be done by lunchtime. I didn't put my name forward but after the first scrubber bailed I did offer cos it didn't seem like the list would go without a scrubber and what's wrong with a few extra bucks what with the holidays approaching?
This is the problem.
I was off sick on the monday and tuesday.. Doing overtime so close to any period of sickness is frowned upon in the NHS (and in most other private and public organisations I imagine) because the rationale of the employer is "well you're sick because you're doing so much overtime. If you're too sick to work then you're too sick to do extra work at premium overtime rate".
I can see their point. they now have to pay me sick pay for the two days i was ill, and annual leave for the saturday i'm having off as holiday pay, AND overtime pay for the work i'm doing on top of that. No wonder the NHS is screwed. and i know a lot of people who play that system even worse than I do. but if you want the skilled labour guys be prepared to pay through the nose foe it. it's the one ace the workers have against exploitation, a labour example of supply and demand that's just as essential now as it was a hundred years ago.
So now I have the PTB frowning at me. And I feel bad, and I've written on the board that I will rescind my offer of overtime if ANYONE else wants to take it from me. But if no one does???
anyways, i better go and get ready for the afternoon shift.
