When in danger, When in doubt, Run in circles, Scream and shout!
--Arkady Darell
i believe this is the motto of the current republican party. on the plus side, mccain's polling is tanking, both
nationally, in
key swing states, and even in
some red ones.
nate silver, over at the happy stats blog
fivethirtyeight, thinks that maybe this -- 'OMG gotta suspend the campaign (not) and postpone the debate that's been planned for a year (WTF)' -- wasn't a bonehead move on the mccain camps part, but instead the
faux-maverick is "doubling down" on the debates.
i think that's giving the mccain camp quite a bit of credit. his team is not filled with idiots, but rick davis and steven schmidt, mccain's top aides, do exhibit the non-intellectual intelligence of savants. they go by
instinct, gut, and gamble instead of research, deliberation, and sense-making; guided by what might make a winning tactic rather than what might constitute a credible and beneficial policy.
maybe some people want the leader of the free world to march around ever-repeating clint eastwood's famous "do you feel lucky? do ya?" line no matter what the circumstances are, but the truth is after a while (and not a long one) somebody will call that bluff and answer "why yes, sir. i feel luckier than you."
it seems to me the mccain teams "scream and shout" tactics might finally be coming to bite them in the ass. and that's lucky for us.
and by the way, i don't say that as a democrat, but as an american.
