Lower German (Plattdeutsch)
There have been several posts about German dialects and I thought I might give you an example of Lower German (Plattdeutsch) as it used to be spoken in or near Bremen. Nowadays only old people or people from the surrounding villages speak this kind of Platt. This is taken from a daily news broadcast of a local radio station.
I've taken the first part of today's news and translated it into German and English. If you want to listen to it, there's an MP3 and a real audio on the web-page. Unfortunately, they have no archive, so the translated audio will be gone tomorrow.

Berlin: bei der neuen Pisa-Studie ist Deutschland auf dem dreizehnten Platz gelandet. Vor vier Jahren stand die Bundesrepublik noch auf Platz achtzehn. Im Besonderen ging es um die Naturwissenschaften. Ein Sprecher der Organisation für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung, OECD, sagte, Deutschland habe dieses mal besser abgeschnitten, als bei der vorherigen Untersuchung. Er hat aber auch gesagt, daß die Untersuchungen nicht verglichen werden können, weil sich das Verfahren geändert hat. In der PISA-Untersuchung wird stetig verglichen, was die 15-jährigen Schulkinder können. In den kommenden Wochen wird das amtliche Ergebnis vorgestellt.

Berlin: Germany has landed on the 13th place in the new Pisa-study. Four years ago, Germany made place 18. Special focus was on the natural sciences. A spokesman for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD, said, Germany did better this time than during the last study. But he also said, that the studies are not really comparable because the procedure has changed. The Pisa-study continuously compares the knowledge of 15-year-old school children. The official results will be presented during the next weeks.
