I watched this on film just the other day! ... and also in the theatre, upon second run here in N America, I guess around spring 2005. For the most part it held up on second viewing. I liked it extremely seeing it in the theatre but missed the first 45 min. or so due to a meeting at work. Watching it last week I found some of the acting hard to take but that could be a cultural thing, regardless the guy who played Hitler, Bruno Gantz (?), he did an absolutely amazing job. I love the shaky hand thing.

I agree. Bruno Ganz did an exceptional job here and well, let's just say for a German actor to take on that role was... brave, to say the least. I can only imagine how weird it would be to, say, run into him in public in Germany.

I saw it in the theaters when it came out and I have to say some bits of it were more than slightly disturbing. The woman with the kids was about the worst part in my opinion... not a movie I would watch again. (Being vague to prevent spoilers here. Or trying to, rather.)

I agree with the part with the woman and the kids. I knew about it before hand(I'm a history geek), but actually watching it was awful.

To me that just indicated how crazy and brainwashed they all were in the end. The obvious question is: What would the Russians have done to any of them, had they been captured?

I was planning to watch that this weekend. It looks very intriguing and is not without parallels to modern failed military pursuits and the downfall of egotistical leaders.

Drawing parallels at this point can be a scary thing to do but it's necessary. Not to say that we're anywhere NEAR this degree of madness. But it's worrisome what is possible even in the here and now, and how a country can be... controlled by fear, using the same methods.

"Wahret den Anfängen", we say in German.
Loosely translated that would be "Behold/watch for/observe the beginnings."

It's almost like they're taking some of the old nazi methods and serve them up in a new wrapping. You've probably seen this -- speaks for itself.

Yes, he made it all so real. Such a good actor. I'm sorry I missed the German reaction to this movie INSIDE Germany. Was he in talk shows? How was it perceived? I read German articles here and there but being away and just reading about things from afar, you miss so much in terms of Zeitgeist and nuances.
