Oktoberfest 2009

Sep 19, 2009 06:09

Oktoberfest starts today.

It's a sixteen-day festival held annually in Munich and runs from late September to early October. It's one of the most famous events in Germany -- it also is the world's largest fair, with some six million people attending every year. Other cities across the country and the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the Munich event. Food & drink plays a major role, of course, as do rollercoaster rides, parades and general merriment with adult beverages.

Some typical (Bavarian) Oktoberfest fare includes:

- Hendl ( chicken)
- Schweinsbraten ( roast pork)
- Haxn ( knuckle of pork)
- Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick)
- Würstel ( sausages) along with Brez'n ( Pretzel)
Knödeln (potato or bread dumplings)
Käsespätzle (cheese noodles)
- Reiberdatschi ( potato pancakes)
Sauerkraut or Blaukraut ( red cabbage)
Obatzda (a fatty, spiced cheese-butter concoction)
Weisswurst (Bavarian white sausage)
