Well, I checked on the status of my OCS packet yesterday, and it's complete and ready to be sent in. However, brigade S-1 told battalion S-1 that the next selection board doesn't meet until October. That is unacceptable, as I need to be commissioned by November in order to apply for FLEP. I was walking away dejected, praying and asking God what on earth the point of getting interested in all this was in the first place. Then it suddenly occured to me that it makes no sense for there not to be a selection board between now and then; they have classes throughout the year. Also, what about direct select? Is that still a possibility? I went back and talked to the S-1 OIC, himself an OCS graduate (barely before his 43rd birthday, 42 being the age limit). He called the chief up at brigade S-1, and it turns out that the 101st has already filled all its slots for OCS direct select, but since our brigade is currently attached to 3rd ID, we might be able to use on of their slots if they have any left over. More and more this is looking like if I do get FLEP, it will be a miracle. It's like what the chaplain told me about a month ago; when God interferes in your life to make things better for you, he makes it very clear that it was him!
When I got to the flight terminal to come back from that robotics class a week ago, they told me and my bud that it would be the 13th or 14th before we'd have a flight, so we needed to take a bus to FOB Striker and get some tent space to sleep in for the next couple of days. That very night (the 11th, I think), the NCO from FOB Striker stables came and told him (while I was on the phone) that a flight was leaving that morning at 6am. When we got back to the terminal, it turned out that the flight was just for him, and not me. But, I was advised that I could stick around in case someone didn't show up. I REALLY wanted to go back to Striker and get some more sleep and take a couple more days to chill, but I knew that if word got back to my unit that I missed an opportunity to fly back, I'd be in trouble. And sure enough, there were open slots on that flight due to some no-shows. Dammit! Then, for the first 48 hours after I got back, it was pretty much constant GO GO GO. It was kind of chill the past couple of days, but man, I need a vacation!
I've been studyng for the LSAT with the guidebook Christie sent me. So far, it seems right up my alley. The only problem is getting used to critical reading again and thinking on a higher plane than I have for the past few years. I'm sure things will be fine though.
Hahaha, I gave in and bought the latest "Reader's Digest" at the PX the other day, and the very next day a copy of the very same one arrived for me in the mail; my father and stepmother had bought me a subscription for Christmas. Then, 2 days later, the package my wife sent with the LSAT study guide arrived, and it had ANOTHER copy of the same issue! Hahaha, so now I have 3 of that same issue. I'll take 2 out to the patrol base and leave them in the public reading area (aka the latrines).
