This quote is probably my new favorite:
"The nation that will insist on drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to have its fighting done by fools and its thinking done by cowards." -- Sir William Francis Butler
WAAAAAY too true. Most of the "intellectuals" I knew in college were wimps, and most of the soldiers I work with now are morons.
MAN what a crazy holiday season! This was probably the worst Christmas I ever had, BUT, if it remains the worst, I will consider myself truly blessed, since it really wasn't all that bad.
My brothers and I spent most of the time at home working on getting things cleaned up so that mom could sell the house. Let me sum that up: ugh.
We saved our Christmas shopping until the day before Christmas Eve, mainly b/c we were all broke from various financial woes throughout the year. What we could buy wasn't very much, but I figure bailing people out of trememndous financial problems is better than buying them something a little nicer at Christmas.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were both wonderful. The church service on Christmas Ever was nice, despite my being worried about my girlfriend the whole time b/c she left me a voicemail saying she called an ambulance and was heading to the hospital (more on this in a bit). Christmas Day started off w/ me, my bros, and mom exchanging gifts. Then my bros and I headed over to our dad's, where we exchanged gifts further w/ him, our stepmother, and our stepbrother and his pregnant wife. I received something I've been meaning to buy for myself for a few years, and would never think of asking for: a digital camera. OF course, dad and stepmother had ulterior motives; they want pictures from Iraq whenever I get deployed (and of other things). Hey, no problem! EVerything else I got was jawesome too, but due to this post already being long, I won't mention everything here.
I headed back to Ft. Campbell the day after Christmas b/c Christie had to have surgery. She lost a lot of blood due to her illness (benign tumor in a bad place), and now she has a SEVERE chest cold due to her weakened immune system. Her Christmas was far, far, far worse than mine. Other than spending Christmas Eve until Dec26 in the hospital, in the 3 weeks before then she was in Florida w/ her mom who is a lot like my father's father was (evil), and a cousin who is even worse.
OK, this entry is long enough for now.
