Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and richness to life that nothing else can bring. - Oscar Wilde

Love. Stephens had really, truly loved only two people in his life, aside from his parents. His ex-wife and his son. It’d been years since he and Mary Jane were married, but he still thought of her often. In cold, silent winter mornings and uncomfortable, humid summer nights, when there was no one to talk to, he wondered what she was doing. He wondered how to get her back. Sometimes, if it was late enough and he’d had enough to drink, he could convince himself that she would return one of these days, that she missed him too.

His son was different. He wanted Jay to stay away. The boy seemed to like the out-of-state private college well enough. The tuition threatened to break him every month, but if it kept Jay out of Gotham, it was worth it. That’s really all he wanted now. If he couldn’t have Mary Jane back, if his job, when he retired in a few years, left him broken down, with nothing but a meager pension and bad memories, at least he’d have the knowledge that his son was safe, that he’d done something right.
