This was not what I was expecting. Around 10p, Cragen came knocking on my door with some papers that a lawyer had tried to deliver to me at the station. The ex-pro, Gladys, gave me Power of Attorney over her baby and she's gone away for an undetermined amount of time. So that baby and everything about it is my responsibility. I didn't ask for this. All I told her after the identification hearing was to "do the right thing." And she does this?

Then about around quarter after one both phones started ringing, waking both Josh and I up, and that was unnecessary. I guess they really wanted to make sure I was at Mercy ASAP.

The baby needed surgery. She had a bleed in her brain. Her chances were slim that she'd make it without doing the surgery because of the pressure on her brain because of the bleed. Her chances were almost guaranteed to leave her permanently brain damaged and guaranteed her necessity to be in hospice the rest of her life if the surgery was done. Seconds. We're talking seconds here people to think of so many things.

Seconds.
They seemed like days.

I told them not to do the surgery. I don't believe the baby ever had a chance and she shouldn't be living a life of suffering for the selfish pleasures of her mother, a mother who abandoned her. A mother who may never come back. Or who may come back tomorrow. Regardless, she gave me the power to do what I thought was right for her baby. It may easily have been the hardest decision I've ever made, but I don't doubt it was the right one.
