Part OnePart TwoPart ThreePart Four A few long hours later, Carl returned home anxious to tell his wife the great news. He had been promoted to Congressman. It was what he had been waiting for, for quite some time. Haley had stood by his side supporting every move he made, and he had finally done it. In time, he hoped to be Mayor, and he knew that he would have Haley there to provide the support he needed to achieve his dream.
Carl walked into his home eager to find Haley.
"Haley, hunny? I have news!" Carl asked but received no response.
He continued to search his home, "Haley? Are you upstairs?"
"Haley?" Carl asked again when he reached their bedroom. 'Where is she?' Carl asked himself. He ran downstairs and looked for a note. Maybe she had taken Sadie out shopping. But Carl found no note. He walked outside.
He saw her sitting down at the chess table with a blank expression on her beautiful face.
"Haley?" Carl asked walking up to her.
"Hunny, I was looking for you. You scared me."
"I'm sorry. I was just....thinking. I didn't hear you come home," Haley said quietly.
"Hey, is everything alright?" Carl asked concerned.
Haley paused, "Doctor Chase called."
Carl's heart began to race, "What did he say?"
Haley looked into her husband's sweet innocent eyes, "I'm pregnant, Carl."
"NO! YES! YOU'RE PREGNANT! OH SWEET MARY SIMS APPLE PIE!!!!! WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A BABY!!!!!!!!" Carl attempted to hug his wife when Haley stood up and walked to their bedroom.
Carl stood there in amazement. What was going on? He, of course, followed her.
"Hey?" Carl asked curiously, "What's wrong? This is good news."
Haley forced out a smile. How could she disappoint him? How could she hurt him? She loved him. How could she tell him what Doctor Chase told her over the phone? She couldn't.
"I'm ok. I'm sorry. I'm just....in shock, I guess. Doctor Chase said this was normal. I guess it just really hasn't sunk in, that's all," Haley said in her most believing voice.
Carl reached over and squeezed her with all of his might, "Oh Haley. Everything is working out. Do you know that? We're going to have a baby. A little baby of our own. This is big. This is really big."
Haley held Carl and absorbed every bit of his love into her. She needed it more than anything at that moment.
"Haley?" Carl said.
"Yeah?"
"I was promoted to Congressman," Carl said happily.
Haley pulled him closer to her, "CARL! Oh my Gosh! Oh Carl, I'm so happy for you!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Carl giggled, "This is so wonderful. I was promoted. You're pregnant. Everything is just perfect." He held her tighter.
Haley stood there replaying the words of Doctor Chase in her mind. 'Carl is so happy' she thought, 'I can't ruin this. I just can't.'
Later that evening, Haley sat down and had dinner with Sadie.
"Where's Uncle Carl, Aunt Haley?" Sadie asked curiously.
"He had to meet with some men that he works with. He'll be back soon," Haley said softly with so much on her mind. She was barely able to concentrate.
"What time will he be back?" Sadie asked.
"Soon," Haley said.
"How soon?" Sadie asked.
"I don't know Sadie, in less than an hour," Haley answered becoming aggravated.
"Are you sure?" Sadie asked.
"Sadie!" Haley raised her voice, then quickly calmed herself down, "Yes, I'm sure. Now eat your sandwich."
Sadie sat in silence, not daring to look up at her aunt. She took a bite out of her grilled cheese sandwich and said, "Something's wrong, Aunt Haley. Isn't there?"
Haley paused and looked at her concerned niece. She didn't know what to say to her, "N..no," she stuttered, "Everything is just fine."
"I really hope you're not lying to me. Mommy tells me it's not good to fib. It will only come back and hit you in the rear end," Sadie said seriously.
Haley smiled, "Your mommy is right. And I promise you, I am not lying to you. Ok?"
"Ok," Sadie said continuing to eat her sandwich.
"How is it?" Haley asked trying desperately to change the subject.
"Yummy. Like always," Sadie said, then sweetly smiled at Haley.
Haley smiled back.
After lunch, as Haley cleaned up a bit, she heard Carl's carpool outside. He came in with an enormous smile on his face, "Come with me." Carl took her hand and led her to the sofa.
He held onto Haley and pulled her close, "We're all set, Haley. With everything. Mr. Dunlap advised me this evening that I will be receiving a bonus."
"Oh Carl, that's great," Haley said happily.
"But Haley, this bonus puts a new meaning to the word bonus. We'll be all set for a while. I promise you that." He squeezed her tighter, "Nothing in the world could come close to ruining the way I feel about everything. About you. About, " He rubbed her belly, "It."
She smiled at him, "I love you Carl."
"Oh Haley, I love you too."
Not too long after that, Carl decided to get some sleep. He had a long day ahead of him and he was prepared to bring his best. Haley waited downstairs for a bit just thinking to herself.
By the time she climbed into bed, she felt even more horrible than she did before. She needed to tell him. In the morning. No matter what. He deserved to know. He was her husband.
