Kyoko Sakura / Puella Magi Wiki

Personality: Kyoko is initially introduced as a cold, distant Puella Magi; her strategy-- which consists of letting enemies grow to harvest them for power--greatly contrasts with and disgusts many of the main cast, particularly Sayaka. She's portrayed as battle-hungry, easily angered, and seemingly detached from anyone but herself. For the most part, this might be considered true. However, there's also a lot more to Kyoko than what is shown through her first few experiences, and many of her seemingly selfish actions have experiences that make her think these are the best options. At the base of it all, she's much more than just an unconcerned jerk.

Kyoko's character is very much centered around the events that shaped her, and much of her mentality comes from her earlier life. She initially thought like the other, more altruistic Puella Magi--she used her wish for someone else, and believed that her magic was 'saving the world'. However, these actions lead up to the death of her entire family and the suicide of her father, and she soon turns away from her selfless lifestyle. Kyoko is very much centered around herself because of this. It's not because she's self-absorbed, cruel, or takes no interest in anyone, no, but it's because she simply knows that basing her motives on compassion breeds nothing but despair. Because of all she's gone through, she's resilient, seemingly tough, and able to accept difficult things with relative ease. Though initially she may react violently, she's able to adapt well to troubling situations and move forward; this could be because she's already been through many harsh experiences, or because she understands that it's the only thing she can do.

"When you wish for hope,
it creates an equivalent despair."

Despite the emphasis Kyoko places on fighting for no one but yourself, there's a compassion and friendliness inside of her that comes out quite clearly with the people she likes. She's kind to Madoka as she sees the kind of person she is, and she's kind to Sayaka because she sees fragments of her past self in the new Puella Magi. While Kyoko has a drive to defend herself and only herself due to the harm protecting others caused in the past, she soon remembers the joy of those type of beliefs through Sayaka. It's known that Kyoko loved those type of hero stories, and she soon recalls that those stories may have been the very reason she became a Puella Magi in the first place. She tries hard to save Sayaka when the girl goes astray, and she also tries hard to save her when it seems like there's no hope. This shows another of Kyoko's more endearing traits--her persistence. She even states herself that she doesn't want to give up on Sayaka until it's obvious that there's no other way. In some ways, Kyoko could be considered hard-headed--ideas will be implanted in her head and she'll live by them, and when there's something she wants to do she will not be deterred from it.

When Kyoko's character is unwrapped, what you see is a blunt girl, whose experiences caused her to drift apart from her initial dreams and focus on herself for mere survival. She's not afraid to say what it is she wants to say, and if she believes you need to hear it she will say it. She tells Madoka that she'd beat a girl who became a Puella Magi for the mere sake of being one to a pulp, she told Sayaka her life story despite the fact the two were not super closely acquainted, she asked Kyuubey--who she acknowledged as a trickster, phony, and all around fake--if there really was a way to save Sayaka, simply because it was what she wanted to do.

"I wished without understanding people...
and it made everyone suffer."

Kyoko's a realist shaped by the events that changed her, and her selfish needs are shaped by the mistakes of her past. It's ironic that she is misunderstood, like her father before her, because of her hot-headed, distant, and seemingly apathetic behaviour to anyone's well-being but her own. However, as the story develops and Sayaka's struggle deepens, the efforts Kyoko's made to try and restore the fallen Puella Magi reveal her past optimism, and the compassionate empath beneath the seemingly unconcerned battlefront.

Aside from her dual nature in those areas, there's lots about Kyoko that's consistent and unaffected by her situation. She's confident, straight-forward, and a casual speaker. She's got lots of street smarts, and often does what is necessary for survival, or for the situation.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
○ PHYSICALLY ABLE - Kyoko's time is spent dueling with magical, supernatural shadows witches, and she's grown to be physically strong because of it. I mean, jeez, she throws a giant spear around.
○ EMOTIONALLY STABLE - Kyoko can keep her cool in the midst of difficulties, and she's also got a good grasp of who she is and where she is in the world.
○ RELIABLE - When you get Kyoko on your team, you're sure to have a dependable friend and strong comrade. She's talented in terms of battle and she does a lot for the people she cares about--i.e Sayaka, her father, and Madoka.
○ STRAIGHTFORWARD - Kyoko won't hide any of her true intentions or thoughts from someone, and most of the time if she thinks something about you she'll say it to your face. It's easy to tell when you're liked or disliked by her.

✖ ABRASIVE - Kyoko's personality can leave a bit of a bad impression for many people, and her tendency to be straight-forward with her controversial viewpoints may leave others with the belief that she's more uncaring than she looks.
✖ BLUNT - Her tendency to be straightforward with many of the things she says can be taken the wrong way, or place distance between her and other people.
✖ IMPULSIVE - When people piss her off... Kyoko's first instinct is to solve it through, uh, violence.

Samples
First Person Sample: [munch. the first thing heard from the feed is the crunch of someone eating--and there is someone eating! a small, red-haired... rather angry looking girl, actually.]

I've been travelling for four days. [munch. munch. chew.] -- It's been kind of a pain, and if I had to be honest it really sucks.

[and when she finishes what she's eating, she throws it back into the bag she's holding, taking out... another piece of food.] I'm running out of food. Jeez, if that lady wanted to pretend to be my mom, the least she could've done is give me more than just trail mix and a bento. She didn't really think that'd last me three days, did she?

. . . Well, whatever. Anyone know any places to get more things to eat? [munch.] It's like this place never ends.

Third Person Sample:

At first, it was a weird creature with a long tongue. It was drooling, on her bag, and overly friendly. Kyoko thought it weird--who wouldn't? She hadn't seen anything like it, and any experiences she had with extraterrestial looking animals weren't exactly the best ones. It didn't look anything like Kyuubey... it was a lot more stupid looking, but she was still cautious, and she still thought it weird.

Still, even she had to admit it looked harmless. It's tongue liked to wave in the air to warn her when they ventured into Pokémon in the tall grass, and the fact that something so... silly-looking thought it could protect her was kind of ridiculous. Sure, she didn't have her powers here and the fact that some of these things in the wild could breathe fire gave them an advantage, but even she could see that she could handle something as useless as purple rats. All they really did was wag their tails and tackle eventually, nothing big. And yet the drooling... thing still insisted on doing everything.

"You're going to exhaust yourself like that, you know?" she swallowed what she had been eating, looking at the drooling Lickitung. It stared back. Beadily. For a moment she held its gaze, until she looked away, continuing to chew on the apple in her hand nonchalantly. "You're a weird one. And I'm not just saying that because of the fact your tongue is 10 feet long, either."

It said nothing. It preened. She stopped her chewing to stare at it, for a small moment, tilting her head to get a better look at what exactly it was doing.

"Did you get hurt?" The Pokémon acknowledged her inquiry by pausing its action, looking at her, and then going right back to what it was doing. She didn't expect it to respond to her question, or anything, considering the most it ever heard it say was... animal like sounds, or its own name, but that didn't mean she liked being ignored.

"Hey."

It craned its head to look at her, again, and she again disrupted its little grooming job. This time, however, she got up and walked over to it, looked over its body, and pet its head quietly.

"Next time, just dodge. You don't need to take a tackle to the face just to look tough. It was just a purple rat, anyway..." she paused, put the apple in her mouth, and dug into her bag to take out another one. "Wanna eat?"

It said nothing. Looked back down the ground. Continued to preen.

"Huh? Hey... it's gone..."

At this, the Lickitung looked up again. And, now that she noticed it... It actually wasn't preening. It was eating. A bunch. Of Apples.

"Y-- You just can't take my food like that! Who the hell do you think you are?!"

Ah. That was a productive afternoon.
