Hurrah for three-day weekends! First, a few things I'd like to bring you from Tumblr. xfortytwo made a very smart and interesting post there about the purposes of critique, and I added my two cents to it, because I had a point or two I did want to make. And she added her two cents in return. LOOK, ACTUAL DISCUSSION ON TUMBLR! And flames did not erupt. I ( Read more... )

I think it's impossible to get tired of something we didn't get enough of! :D

I was just delighted they survived! Talk about TV history. With all the gore and people being killed off every week, their budding romance was the only thing that kept me watching.

What annoys me with "concrit" in comments is that it's often not about the actual writing at all - not about writing techniques, pacing, narration, characterisation, but about story content. The commenter didn't like character A's reaction in scene X or the fact that character B didn't enter the story until scene Y - basically, the story didn't turn out the way the reader wanted it to in every detail, and they feel compelled to tell the author that. It's not so much "concrit" as a demand for a story that is exactly to their liking.

Yeah, exactly. This is pertinent to the point I was making in my comments re feedback, and the conflation of the two things. People can leave any sort of feedback they like, though they should be prepared to deal with a writer's negative reaction if they dump all their issues on the writer. But they shouldn't call it 'concrit', because that's not accurate; what people react to in stories often is not the craft or technique, but the way stories make them feel.

The first 2 years. I flung caution to the wind with my offers. The last 2 years I have winnowed the list down really tightly to just those sources I would be super excited to get and feel confident I could find a song for. But no sons necessary to start with for me.

I sign up with 8-20 offers usually of sources that I really love and/or want to make a vid for. I usually don't have songs for them although I did find one early this year. I used to be really worried about songs but I've found that if I'm determined and go through lots of music for a month attaching each song to the source I'm looking for, I usually find something that's really great fairly easily. I love when Dear FV letters go up early because I can start looking for treat (or potential offer) music early which helps a lot.

Oh my, that King Arthur/Dean gif set is just pure gold. The first two are so spot on that I thought for a second they must be manips.

Song choice is a biggie for me, when it comes to vidding, e.g. the bit I waste spend most time on, together with clipping. But I would struggle to identify songs before having had sight of the specific request, because it really depends on what character/pairing/focus of the request. It probably would be better for my sanity if I narrowed down my offers, and pre-planed a default vid for each fandom. :P We live and learn...

Thanks for the signalboost. So far feedback has been mixed. My neurotic brain wishes that the organizers just would make an official ruling so I don't have to agonize over issues like this. Pathetic much, I know...
