Vividcon Premieres vid: Sorrow (The Eagle)

Aug 18, 2013 08:05

Title: Sorrow
Music: Ardaigh Cuan
Artist: Anuna
Fandom: The Eagle
Run time: 01:59
Summary: This is the story of Esca Mac Cunoval, whose father was king of the Brigantes, lord of five hundred spears, bearer of the blue war shield. This is the story the movie doesn't tell.

Notes: I was struck by how very much The Eagle (movie version) is Marcus Aquila's story, and how Esca's immense loss is marginalized - his home, his tribe, his family, his freedom, all ripped from him, and there's barely any acknowledgment of what that really means. This is sort of a visual tone poem; it's Esca's story, the magnitude of his loss, told with blood and fire and water and stone. The song is sung in Irish Gaelic.

So many people looked at drafts of this thing over the two years (!) I thought about it/worked on it: talitha78, laurashapiro, killabeez, barkley and elynross all gave stellar beta, and their insights were really critical to the final version, at various points. It takes a village to make a two minute vid, apparently. *g*

Irish Gaelic Lyrics:

Nach tuirseach mise anseo liom féin
Nach n-airím guth coiligh, lon dubh nó traon
Gealbhan, smólach, naoscach féin
'S chan aithním féin an Domhnach

Chorus:
Agus och och Éire 'lig is ó
Ar mo lon dubh is ó
'Sé mo chroí tá trom agus brónach

'Á mbeinn féin in Ardaidh Cuain
'N aice'n tsléibh'úd 'tá 'bhfad uaim
Ba annamh liom gan dul ar cuairt
Go gleann na gcuach Dé Domhnaigh

(Chorus)

English Translation:

I am full of sorrow here alone
Unable to hear the cockerel, blackbird or corncrake
Nor the sparrow, thrush or snipe
Sunday has no meaning for me without these things

Chorus:
Oh Ireland
I have roamed far from you
My heart is heavy with sorrow

If I were in Ardaigh Cuan
Beside the distant mountain
It was often that I would go to visit
The valley of the cuckoo on Sunday

There are a number of alternate translations of the full traditional version; here's one I like.

By myself I'd be in Ard Ti Chuain
Where the mountains stand away
Oh 'tis there I'd let the Sundays go
In a cuckoos lair above the bay

(chorus)
agus och och Eire lig is o
Eire leanndubh agus o
The quiet land of Erin

But my heart is weary all alone
And it sends a lonely cry
To the land that sings above my dreams
And the lonely Sundays pass me by.

I would ravel back the twisted years
and the bitter wasted winds
If the Lord above would let me lie
In a quiet place above the whins.
