No Longer a Corpse
A lifeless corpse, dressed only in her undergarments and slip, leans upright against the wall in the front hall by the entrance into the hotel, or at least it seems that way - until a finger twitches.
Marni Wallace opens her eyes and takes a gasp of air which fills her aching lungs. The change in the setting around her - the bright lights and colors - offsets what little balance she has and sends her spilling over onto the floor. Stunned, she lies there, unmoving, regaining her senses while her mind flutters in every direction. What happened? Where is she?
Confused and disoriented, she clutches her stomach and feels the stitches there. And then she remembers: the blood disease, Nathan and the deadly “Cure.” But she survived? How? And most importantly, where was her baby?
Scrambling to get up, Marni’s hands reach out for something she can use to prop herself up, to get to her feet, to find her child, her husband, anyone who knows anything. Her nails scrape against the floor boards and the edge of the carpet, but she can’t focus on anything quite yet because she isn’t used to the light.
