The Great Danton

Oct 29, 2006 11:54

A handsome young man, thirty-something years in age strides in with impeccable posture, holding himself high with a confidence that might almost be arrogance. Almost. His hair is dark, his features strong and his manner of dress slightly more expensive than most men of his profession in turn-of-the-century London. His clothes are heavy, warm, and ( Read more... )

A much younger and slighter man, dressed very old-fashioned by Angier's standards, stops just inside the door to the kitchen and bows formally. "It's called the Mansion, monsieur. I am Armand St. Just."

Angier bows back in the same manner and holds out his hand in polite greeting. "Rupert Angier. Is that all this place is called, then? 'The Mansion'? What part of the city is it in? And what family resides here?"

For being a man of many secrets, Angier asks many question. That is the way magic works, after all. One must ask questions to learn secrets.

The barrage of questions is greeted by a slight frown for Armand isn't as free in answering questions as he used to be. "No one owns it. Nor is it in any city." He can't quite place the accent as either American or British for the moment. His own is distinctly French. "Where are you from, M. Angier?"

The man's accent is not unnoticed. While Angier himself is of a strong English lineage, his chosen surame and stagename are both of French origin, though not entirely by his own choice.

The man frowns for only a moment in thought. "London, England. Depending on where I'm performing I reside in various parts of the city, so the general London area."

"Tis likely then, monsieur, you'll not find London far from the gates to the grounds, though I cannot promise. Alien planets and 1790's Paris are a bit harder to reach, but usually the Londoners can go home, no matter the time period."

He's careful to move without turnng away from Angier, but Armand goes nearer the hearth so he can warm hiimself. Then he produces another cautious smile. "You're an actor?"

"Very good then." This of course is said as if Alien Planets and 1790's Paris are ordinary things. They are not, but nothing surpsises the man anymore.

Angier grins at that and bows some with a flair. "Partially correct, good sir. I am a magician, the best performer in all of London according to many, and proudly so."

"A stage magician?" Armand smiles, probably more broadly than he has yet. "Oh my. My sister used to be an actress."

After his hands have warmed some. "Will you be performing here then? I think we could all use some good entertainment."

Angier nods. "'The Great Danton', at your service. Well, if your sister is around, I can certainly use an assistant with stage presence. Actresses usually are the best at that sort of thing..."

A shrug at that. "I may as well, if I stay. I think I would bore off the stage for too long. I do wish Cutter was here though, he's an enormous help behind the scenes. And all my equiptment is back in the theatre."

With a laugh, Armand shakes his head. "Oh, monsieur, she's very firmly retired. Married to one of the richest men in England and has a baby already."

Armand ponders the equipment problem. "There is a way you might be able to get some of your equipment without going back to London. Is it very large?"

"Ah, well. Can't very well pull a mother away from her husband and child to perform. Entirely inappropriate." Angier admits with a shrug.

"Is there? Some of it is, but much of it's small. The larges thing I might need would be a water tank, and it's not much taller than I am." He holds up an arm to demonstrate the height.

"There is a closet in the Mansion that produces items people may need. Getting exactly what you want can require great patience, but surely a man like yourself knows how to be patient. It's called the plothole."

After a pause, he continues. "I don't doubt even your water tank could be in there, but you'd have to strong enough to pull it out."
