The Great Danton

Oct 29, 2006 11:54

A handsome young man, thirty-something years in age strides in with impeccable posture, holding himself high with a confidence that might almost be arrogance. Almost. His hair is dark, his features strong and his manner of dress slightly more expensive than most men of his profession in turn-of-the-century London. His clothes are heavy, warm, and ( Read more... )

A much younger and slighter man, dressed very old-fashioned by Angier's standards, stops just inside the door to the kitchen and bows formally. "It's called the Mansion, monsieur. I am Armand St. Just."

Angier bows back in the same manner and holds out his hand in polite greeting. "Rupert Angier. Is that all this place is called, then? 'The Mansion'? What part of the city is it in? And what family resides here?"

For being a man of many secrets, Angier asks many question. That is the way magic works, after all. One must ask questions to learn secrets.

The barrage of questions is greeted by a slight frown for Armand isn't as free in answering questions as he used to be. "No one owns it. Nor is it in any city." He can't quite place the accent as either American or British for the moment. His own is distinctly French. "Where are you from, M. Angier?"

The man's accent is not unnoticed. While Angier himself is of a strong English lineage, his chosen surame and stagename are both of French origin, though not entirely by his own choice.

The man frowns for only a moment in thought. "London, England. Depending on where I'm performing I reside in various parts of the city, so the general London area."

The young Irishman (boy, really) is cautious, but also very curious about Angier's appearance.

"Sure and if I knew I'd tell you." Quickly, he adds, "Sir." Wouldn't do to forget his manners.

"Thank you anyway, young man." Angier nods. "Should you find someone who does know, feel free to send them my way."

"Only I don't think anyone knows for sure. We all just came here so. The lucky ones have friends waiting for them." He smiles a shy, helpful smile. "Maybe you've friends here already, sir."

"Sadly I don't think I'm so fortunate. I can't say I've many friends around these days. Though I don't suppose I have any right to complain, I brought it upon myself. And I certainly don't regret it."

Angier smiles broadly at the arrival of the child, and kneels to be level. "Hello there. What might your name be?"

Angier can't help but grin as well, and bows some to the boy. "I am the Great Danton."

Oz gives the new arrival a tip of the hat and a small bow. "Good evening, young man."

The Londoner bows his head some to the man. "'Evening, Sir."

He grins. "Welcome to the Mansion! Please don't ask me where it is, as I certainly don't know. It's no place I'ver ever been, at least before I came here."

Angier laughs. "Nobody seems to know. Strange that not one of the many people living hear seems to have any idea, isn't it?"

The man holds out a hand to shake. "Rupert Angier. I don't believe I caught your name, Sir?"

"The Mansion is generally what we call it." April says with a smile, balancing a 1-year-old boy with dark blonde curls on her hip.

"So I've heard." Angier frowns for a moment before smiling again. "This your son, Madame? Quite the handsome fellow."

April beams and kisses the baby's cheek. "Yes he is. Just like his father." she says with a little wry smile. "And just like his Daddy." she coos.

"I'm April, by the way." she says with a smile. "And this is William."

William tilts his head curiously at Angier.

Angier raises a brow some, almost involuntarily though not at all rudely. More out of curiosity. "Beg pardon? Are his father and his Daddy not the same person then?" Almost unheard of in a woman so young, where he's from. The only time women ever remarried is if they were widowed for some reason or another, after all.

The out-of-place Londoner bows his head in greetig. "Rupert Angier, it's a pleasure to meet you both."

He smiles at the child. "Good strong name, William."

From his pocket Angier produces a folded handkerchief and places it in his hand before the child. He passes his hand over the thing several times with nothing happening, until in one pass the thing disappears from his palm entirely. He holds up both of his hands to the child as if to demonstrate he's not holding it. "How do you like that, William?"
