*coughs awkwardly* Well. Let’s see. I never was very good at these official introduction sorts of things. I’m a simple man, and in my experience the ones who talk the most, especially about themselves, are the ones who have the least to say. But it looks like I don’t have much of a choice.
In any case, hello. M'name's Sam Vimes, and last I checked I was commander of the Ankh-Morpork city watch (finally again. My days of diplomacy are over, thank you). I’ve been told things are pretty strange around here, but I figure things can’t be any stranger than back home, so if you all just stay out of my way, I’ll stay out of yours, got it?
Unless you get in someone else’s way who don’t want it. Then I might have to get in your way after all.
And I guess I should just say up-front, I’m not particularly fond of vampires. Or kings.

Er, no one’s seen my wife, have they? She’s told me there’s some kind of official function I’m supposed to be attending tomorrow, but last I spoke to her it looked like she’d forgotten, and I’m thinking if I can avoid her until then I just might get out of the damn thing.
