Tom has presumably been told where he is by Ada and now he sits somewhere nearby, sobbing unashamedly.

She glances up at him. "Thou art the man?"

He looks up and wipes his face with his sleeve. "Pardon?"

A little gesture to Richard. "The man who loves him."

"Yes, madam."

She sighs. "Ill-done. But he shall live again, doubtless."

"Ada... Miss Clare said, he will be back in three days."

"I thought as much."

"You... You did, madam?" He is still sniffling, but trying valiantly to stop.

"It seems a consequence of this place."

"I know. He... he died once before." He wipes his eyes with his sleeve again.

Ragnelle lays a hand on him, very lightly, and sighs again. "With luck it shall be soon done. I am awearied of death."

Tom nods and draws his knees to his chest, watching Richard and waiting for him to get up.
