Kate Morgan, Renaissance scholar turned private investigator, has only just arrived and has already encountered the Mansion's bloodier side. Her olive skin is pale, but she's composed enough as she enters the main room with blood on her clothes and without the coffee she'd sought out the kitchen to get ( Read more... )

Oh, blood; Dexter's always interested in blood.

"Again? What does the crime scene look like?"

"Um, a huge mess? The guy's head got blown off, basically, and the woman was stabbed repeatedly."

He winces a little. Or does a rather good impression of a disturbed wince, at least. "God, these people are strange. -- My name's Dexter, by the way. I work as a blood splatter expert in Miami - or worked, as the case may be - which is why I asked."

"I'd ask if you wanted to take a look, but the situation seems pretty obvious. The woman was conscious long enough to give a name, although I don't know how reliable that is -- she's got to be pretty out of it right now, after all. Looks like it probably wasn't a one-off, someone went crazy with a knife thing, though. She was pretty heavily armed, and her throat's marked up like someone put a blade to it. Maybe a hostage thing?" Kate's investigator's instincts are coming to the surface quickly, although she's rarely been involved in anything this bloody.

"I don't know; you said that she was stabbed repeatedly. I highly doubt someone would stab someone else they were trying to keep safe as a hostage-- unless that man was the one attempting a rescue." Dexter frowns a little, slightly intrigued by this situation. "Then again, this place is known for its violent residents, so who knows, it could have just been a personal argument that went bad."

"Bargaining, maybe? There are two shoulder wounds and one in the abdomen. If the more minor -- although I hesitate to call those minor -- injuries came first, the attacker could have been trying to get something in return for her life?" Kate shrugs. "It's not my area of expertise, though. Obviously, the police usually handle stuff like this. I'm just a private investigator." She considers that for a moment. "It did sound like she knew him. Is it really that common around here?"

"It could very well be. Sadly, there aren't that many police around here- at least, not that many who involve themselves in this sort of business." He puts on a bit of a sad or contemplative face. "A few days after I came here, someone was killed by a - you won't believe this, but I am not kidding - vampire. And then a few days after that, somebody killed someone else and used their blood to write poetry on the walls. This is a very strange place."

"Oh my god. No wonder this kind of thing happens, with no legal repercussions. Gives every sick bastard a chance to do whatever he's been dreaming of, huh?"

She probably will never realize the irony of that statement, considering who she's talking to, but-- "Exactly. I'd offer to help, but I'm only a lowly laboratory geek. The best I can do is panic a little over the murders and give whatever forensics help I can muster."

Kate nods. "It's not really my area of expertise, either. I'm usually finding out cheating husbands and stuff, not investigating murders." Usually, anyway. Every now and then, something a little bigger comes up.

"Well, let me know if you find anything else. I may not be able to help, but I'm at least good for bouncing ideas off of."

"Will do. I like bouncing ideas off of people. It keeps me from talking to walls."
