Why didn't someone warn me?
All freshman Classics majors should be required to take German. Because if someone had forced me to learn it when I was a freshman, I would not be in my current fix (the same one I'm in every single semester I've taken an upper level Classics class): the majority of quality articles about the Classical world and languages are written in German. The best search engine for the most recent articles is in German. Most importantly, the three articles that are constantly referenced for the poems which I am trying to analyze right now are all written in German.
Maybe if I start learning next week, I can learn enough to limp by next year when I'm trying to write my thesis...
