I have mashed potatoes inside the sleeve of one of two Christmas presents that I received - a nice green sweater.
I have a tousle-headed (at five in the evening a hairbrush still hasn't been used) seven-year-old shooting little discs from a Spider-Man toy at me.
I have an adorable Australian Shepherd lying on my feet, begging for more attention.
I have just watched three movies, while speaking very little, because no one in this family really needs to talk, apparently. The movies were Santa Clause 3, Shrek 3, and now the Nanny Diaries. Next is whatever Kristen feels like.
The best part of today is the dog, Cleo and the cat, Shadow. But mostly the dog, because the dog loves me and wants attention, etc. etc.
Or the new sweater and pair of jeans, I like those too. Though I think that the Weird Michigan book I got through the Dirty Santa last night is the best Christmas gift I've had since my parents got over the gift-giving stage of their divorce.
Better than yesterday, anyhow, when all I wanted to do was give Lee a piece of my mind and couldn't stop coughing. I can stop coughing now, anyhow.
I am grateful, today, for my family. They're lazy, one of them constantly makes me want to kill things, another one alternates between throwing things at me and adoring me, one I'm never sure if she does or doesn't like me because of whose daughter I am, one is annoying as hell half the time and better than some of my friends the other half, and they don't shower me with presents like so many families seem to do. In short, they're a real family. And over half of my creativity and inspiration comes from them. The book that has the best chance of ever being completely finished? A collection of short stories from things that have happened throughout my life - at least 90% of which is family-centric. Seeing my grandpa and grandma smile... that's worth it, it really is. I can do this.
Especially since I'm now going to the playground with Kristen and Kid. Trust me when I say that you don't want to know the number of times we've gone to one of those throughout our lives, with or without adult prescence. The one here in Ithaca and the ones in Shields.
Happy Holidays, everyone.
ETA - The playground was great. Most relaxing thing that has happened since I've been down from school, to tell the truth. Swinging on patches of ice, discussing things that probably shouldn't be discussed on elementary school grounds, etc. etc. etc.
