So my daughter is planning her senior year of high school. She wants to be in
theater. Direction to be exact, but knows she needs to know all aspects. So except
for her mandatory courses, of which she is taking advanced placement courses, she is taking
art, and drama and photography. Al good choices for her career path. Well apparently the
Kent school district does not agree. She she still needs 1.0 credits of PE to meet their
regs. No mind you she has been told for the entire time she has been going there, and in
Junior high, that if she stayed in music for her 4 years, that the 1.0 credit would be waived.
well now they are changing their tune. Stating that because her senior year is full of 5 credits
of "electives" that she has room for PE and they will only waive .5 credits. I have argued with
her counselor, and her principle and now plan on going above their heads. She is she was taking a
full load of "non-elective" classes then they would wave it, but will not for art or drama.
I am really pissed and feel like she is really being singled out and not allowed to pursue
what she wants to study even after completing all the courses she was told she needed. She is
not planning on being an athlete. She does not need PE. I feel like screaming for her, because I
don't have a whole lot of faith that I am going to be able to change the outcome, and she is going
to have to give up one of the classes that are very important to her.
what is our school system trying to tell our kids. It sure isn't be who you are, it's more like be
who we think you should be.
Crap.
I'll update after I go to the next level.
Oh, and the Washington state code does not state how many credits of OE are required for graduation, so this
must be a Kent school district thing.
Wish me luck.
