Speak for Yourself

While shopping for Francie’s birthday gift, I also picked up a few things for myself. A copy of Vanity Fair, and a copy of Mansfield Park, as well as Anne Rice’s new novel, Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. I’m not terribly excited about the last one there, but I figure I should give it a shot at least.

I also picked up a copy of Come on Feel the ( Read more... )

I'm telling you: Chabon = hack.

I was very excited to read that you had picked up Mansfield Park. When you get around to reading it, let me know. We can compare notes. Vanity Fair was a bit of a slog for me, ultimately; but the folks who love it really love it.

I'm pretending that you didn't buy an Anne Rice novel. No -- shhh. It's best this way.

This book has been almost literally painful to get through. I'm two-thirds of the way through it and not a god damned thing has happened. Ridiculous.

Anyway, we'll just keep that Anne Rice purchase a secret for now. It was an impulse purchase anyway. I don't even know that I'll ever read it.

So, I found this table at Barnes and Noble covered with the Barnes and Noble Classics series, which is where I found the other two novels. I think I'm going to try and get the rest of the series if I can, since they are so inexpensive, and yet still well made. That means I might have to resort to paperbacks at some point, but it's probably all for the best anyway.

Okay, so this whole buying books in hard cover/cloth edition is insane. I thought my book snobbery was bad enough with my disdain for anything mass-market but jeez!

I read the first eight pages of Anne Rice when it came in and promptly packed it away to give to my mother. Ever since Memnoch I've lost all interest.

I don't think my preference for hardcover is so unreasonable. They look nicer.

Some look better. Some. For authors or books I really enjoyed I'll buy them in hardbound editions. I'll occasionally chance it on something that sounds interesting and pick it up in the more expensive type instead of waiting a year for the paperback. But all the time? No way. Unless it is from Half-price Books, which we don't have here, way cheaper than what I would pay for it at my work. That's my justification. I do love you more for having a book quirk though. Just so ya know.

Fair enough. I refuse to change my stance on mass-market paperbacks though.

*shudder*

Oh yes. Mass-markets are horrible horrible beasts that I am enthusiastic about the idea of banning them.
