I'm probably about to offend half of you guys, but I gotta vent. If you actually do any of these things, please consider yourselves excepted from my criticism, if only because I don't actually want to be telling anyone, least of all anyone I sorta know, what they should or shouldn't do. That said, time for a properly strident tone:
Texting technology has moved up toward the top of my list of annoying things, just below people who light up cigarettes upwind of you.
Seriously, guys. I mean, you're talking to someone, and they kinda pause what they're saying and trail off and look down at their hands and move their thumbs around quietly, and after however long they look back up and expect to start talking again? Really?
Or you're in a movie theater watching a movie, and your friend next to you is texting someone, and you nudge them to cut it out and they get annoyed???
Or you're in class listening to the teacher teach, and the student next to you is pressing buttons with the volume on and pretending to pay attention.
Or you're teaching a class and clearly stated in the syllabus that you reserve the right to ask anyone texting to leave for the day, and you still have to talk to two students on the matter within the first three weeks of class. (I haven't kicked anyone out yet, not actually that mean. So far.)
Don't even start me on people who text while driving. :/
I know it may be too early for us to have developed an etiquette for all this evolving technology, but come on. Common courtesy? Politeness? Is it that hard for people to remember where they're at?
Gawd, I just turned into a cranky old woman. /o\ But do you guys see it?
