I've been working on my tight-lacing at night and I'm really happy with how it's coming along. I comfortably sat around last night for about three hours with my chemise on under the corset while it was properly laced up. There was never any discomfort, pain, or difficulty in moving. The only issue I've had so far was having to bend from the waist as opposed to bending in the torso, but I know that's something that just will need to be learned.
I'm very pleased with the way my few little Victorian and Edwardian outfits look with the piece, but I've sort of run into a dilema. The corset fits so well and gives me such a perfect hourglass that I'm going to need to seriously adjust my gowns, blouses and skirts to fit over it properly! It's really impressive when I pin the dresses back so that they lay right over the undergarments, but I can't walk around with safety pins in the back of everything I wear whenever I dress up.
So here's my problem: I am not by any stretch of the imagination an advanced seamstress. I can follow basic patterns with moderate success and I can do basic alterations to said patterns. Trim doesn't give me a problem. Sleeves often do. The fact that it's hard for me to find patterns in my size doesn't help either, and this sudden need to size everything dramatically differently is another new challenge.
I'm considering signing up for sewing lessons. They teach them at Hancock Fabrics and it's a 6-week course for $60, starting next Thursday. I'd really, really, really like to go, but financial strain, middle of the wedding, and Thursday nights being UFC night all make me hesitant. I know some of my friends are far more talented and advanced seamstresses than I am (coughcough
refined_miragescoughcough)and I'm curious how y'all learned your craft. Keep in mind that most of the women in my family are very "liberated" and don't touch their sewing machines except to dust them. My mom, bless her heart, can hardly sew a button.
So what do you think? Get lessons? Find someone who's more advanced? Buy a book? Suggestions and advice are certainly appreciated.
Also, I'd love to get a dress form but I don't know where I'd put it. It could probably fit in the bedroom, but I think it might freak me out at night.
