日本人の知らない日本語
私の前のポーストは知らん顔をしてください。｢日本人の知らない日本語」という本を笑わせたから、大丈夫ですよ。
As I said, ignore my last post please. I read a book called "Japanese that Japanese people don't know" (sounds so much better in Japanese), it made me laugh, so I'm fine now.
I'm ready to study.
That book really is hilarious. Its written by a former teacher who taught Japanese to foreign students studying in Japan. I feel connect to her stories in so many ways... both having been a student of Japanese, and being a teacher trying to teach my native language. While I know a lot of what the characters do is probably fabricated, there are some points which, well, either I've done it, thought it, or wanted to do it but was told "no."
My favorite so far is "Why can't we eat the ravens?" They're bigger than chickens and a pest to everyone, so why not kill and eat them!? It just makes sense.

There are specific counters for different sized/shaped objects. So a pair of socks has a counter, a pair of ski have another, paper another and so on. Aside from particles, it might be the most frustrating part of th language. So one student asked, "Whats the counter for a three-headed dragon?" and the teacher, already frazzled from a slue of other questions, just melted down.

So tonight I've got a drinking party to attend, to celebrate some teachers 25th year of teaching. Yay? I'm not exactly feeling it though. Maybe I'll bring along my book as a conversation piece.
