Friday Time Waster: Cover Tunes
Elmer42 and I are putting together a play list of the most awesome cover tunes we have in our iTunes library. But... what awesome cover tunes are NOT in our iTunes library?
In my opinion, a good cover is one that
1) reinterprets the song in a way the original artist could not imagine or did not intend or
2) makes the cover song better than the original.
Example of
1) Dave Brubeck's Take 5 done by a pakistani orchestra
2) Pretty much any cover of any Dylan song. Love the man's work but he's a better poet than singer.
What I do not like in a cover: no interpretation. Someone who just wanted to have sung the song originally themselves and does nothing interesting with the arrangement. Also minor tweaks on the original, like the current Countrified version of Life is a Highway by Rascal Flatts which is just lame all the way around. Nothing added and Tom Cochrane's voice was better.
So help me LJ land. What do I need to download? What are your favorite covers?
