To Inspiration and Beyond! Excerpt of Chapter 1 : Paladin

Togkyio wasn’t always the mess it is now. Once, it was a beacon-it was a face of a golden age.

And then Man Grew Proud. There have been nothing but useless fan fictions one after the other.

No critic could stand against them! No canon could prevent the desecrations from happening. I failed, again and again to combat the horrible mutations of canon. I will always fail, unless I take a final stance.

High Governor Evail Uvularde grew  from a fanboy into a critic seventeen years ago, yet even the efforts of the governor to curb the foul results of fanfiction were fruitless; his words fell on deaf ears, and those who supported him all died in flames.

There he stood, under the evening sun, gazing out on Togkyio. His hands were behind his back, and behind him men and women spoke-authors well-known, who came from all over the world to indignantly to rouse Evail to action.

The Magic Writer said, “I have said time, and time again, that there were no transfer students to my magic school-but no! That couldn’t stop them! My protagonists are being abused-my plot is mocked! This is a disgrace!”

An ancient linguist lighted his pipe and said after a silence fell, “I have never come to terms regarding portrayal of Always Chaotic Evil enemies in my novels…I loath to see it taken for granted now; Orcs are now quite simply evil, and that’s that.”

“That’s nothing! My stories fashioned so many a devotee; some grabbed the Dark Side and became Anti-Fans! Even now they deliberate amid themselves to dishonor me! I’m a Child Phenomenon!” the Child Author cried. None of the others noticed him, mostly due to his prose.

Evail Uvularde didn’t speak, and a trickle of sweat went down his cheek; he could hear the authors’ legal teams talk among themselves. There was too much to be lost by the foul braggarts! The foul child authors who bend canon will be punished!

“No critics, no snarky reviews, nor anything you say could stop them,” he said finally. “Fanfiction writers are prized even in the fan community, and rarely does one ascend from love-scene writings into proper use of canon. Regardless, the good from this is little, and the bad is bad publicity. I will handle this. Give me two weeks, and I will abolish all fanfiction from the face of the planet.”

“My, you don’t need to take that approach,” said a man among them. “There are good and respectable authors out there.”

“Again, this will be covered,” Evail muttered. “That is all I could say.”

Chairs moved as the authors stood up; the table was large and wide, and over a hundred people were in the room. Some authors were content, some were cold, and some were unconcerned. But for all it was worth, Evail knew that much more was hung at stake than simple entertainment in fan bases.

When the last lawyer and author left, Evail turned to those remaining; men wrapped in a ghastly pale, cloaked and hooded.

Evail nodded at them, and then turned to his city. Thousands of half-dragon Sues flew all around the place. He watched it bitterly, and then said, “Begin the hunt.”

My, my! Is this a plot brewing in a snarky tale? A villain in the first chapter? The entire fan community of every story is in peril?

As for people with sharp eyes, the Magic Writer is J.K.Rowling, the Ancient Linguist is J.R.R. Tolkien, and the Child Author, is, of course, Paolini.

Har har.
